.357 max extractor removal

Is it necessary to remove the extractor when reaming out the .357 mag to max?   Or is there an advantage to removing it?

It would be bad news to catch the reamer on the extractor which is much harder than the barrel, best to remove it, they aren't hard to remove, just knock the rear roll pin out(either side) with a pin punch or nail that just fits in the hole, blunt the tip of the nail so it's flat, otherwise you may ruin the roll pin.

I concur. Remove the pin furthest back, and slide the extractor out. Pay attention to the LEAF SPRING as you slowly pull the extractor out. You'll need to put that back in the same way.

Thanks Tim.    Does the pin just hold the extractor in place or is there a spring involved?   BTW I got the reamer in the mail today.   I'm hoping to get to work on the barrel on Monday.

See the pic of the 2nd general extractor parts in the FAQs, the little curl on the leaf spring goes to the rear of the extractor. Dunno for sure why they put the curl on it, I've made a bunch of the leaf springs with just a simple arch, no curl, and they work fine, actually better because I use a bit thinner spring material, it makes it easier to remove a round from the chamber.

Thanks Tim.   I am now officially a proud owner of a .357 max.   The extractor removal was not nearly as bad as I expected.   The reaming process was so easy.  Start to finish it took my dad and I about 20 minutes.   BTW.  I'll put the reamer in the mail tomorrow.
