What I gonna do now!
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:30:53 AM »
The other day I mated up all my mismatched barrels to recievers.  Now all my H&R's are good to go and not a shim in the bunch!   :D

I was able to do this because I once heard Pete say he kept a few extra recievers around and that seemed like a good idea to me at the time so in a fit of buying I got some extras also!   ;D  Thanks a bunch for the idea Pete...  ::)  Well, at least they were all priced right...  :-[

But now I got 3 extra (Remington made) recievers in my safe with no prospects for barrels for them!   :-\  I can't sell them, the minute I do someone will show up with a 9.3x74R barrel they want to give me...

But I can't think of any caliber offered that I want.  Well, maybe a 357 but I could darn near buy a complete rifle for what a barrel goes for... and maybe a 45-90 but I already got a 45-70 and a 45-120... a 405 would be nice, but considering the cost of a rebore...

What to do, what to do...  :-\

Oh you poor thing!  That has to be the saddest story of the day!  Too many receivers and not enough chamberings that you don't have, how sad! :'( ;D

get a barrel and do a stub to some really off-the-wall caliber.

Richard, ya gotta be patient.  I'm down to only two spare SB2 frames now.  I had 3 until today.  I just got a 32-20 barrel that fit well on two and perfect on the third.  I thought I had a spare SB1 frame for it, but somehow it grew up into a SB2.  You never know from day to day what's gonna be next that ya gotta have.  A month ago, the 32-20 was only wishful thinking.  The two spares left KNOW they're gonna go to work before too much longer.  Just now, I can't say what they will be.  All my Handis now are unshimmed and unmodified for fit.  We kinda put ourselves out of the shim business.  I'm thinking of picking up another SB2 to keep my spares back to three.

Richard,

Ones that can be done with just a barrel & reamer are easy,

445SM, 7x57AI, 30-06AI, 220 Swift, & many others.  4D website lists a bunch more possiblities.

I'd sell the receivers and maybe that 9.3x74R barrel will just appear.  It is always easy to get another receiver.

Richard,

This is a strange affliction we have with these Handi's.  If you're like me, you've probably got some you ain't even shot, but you still want more!

There must be another 20 calibers you could stub or have chambered.....just sayin'

Well, maybe a 357 but I could darn near buy a complete rifle for what a barrel goes for...

What does cost have to do with it? This is an addiction, nothing rational about it. You neeeeed a 357.

I neeeeed another SB2 frame.

I hate to mention this again, but...... we saw a year ago that for 250 rifles ordered they  would do a specific run. If we  could ever get some wholesaler to commit and take orders .....Or for barrels even. I would order any of a dozen chamberings and sell blood to the Red Cross until it came in. A 25/20 would be one, a 405 win would be another. I wonder if an order of 250 barrels would make them do a run of accessory barrels in a specialty chambering, of a bore size they already make?

I kind of always thought a  30-40 Krag would be a great round in a Handi! Just for historical reasons if nothing else! Can be loaded down for small game and slap a 220 gr Sp under a decent powder load and your ready for big game!!

Morning Richard,
Sorry to read your addiction has taken such a turn... Not good... I fear the end may be near... ;)

I agree with Bill, look at the old timer chamberings!!  The 25-20, 32-20 are tow great handi chamberings, a bit bigger the 25-35 and 32-40 are another pair!

I have everything I could want in Handis... well I would still like a 32-40. ::)

I wish you the best my friend,

Brings the thought of my early days with Contenders. Trying to accumulate early barrels came to a screeching halt when I learned that you would need over 600 barrels to have one of each variation in chamberings, barrel lengths, contours, etc. And this was long before Custom Shop barrels came along. So, over the years I converted, via trading, my Contenders to lever guns, a simple solution for me. Who needs to dig through cabinets full of barrels looking for that 6" .218 Bee barrel?

Hoping all is well with you Richard.

My 25-35 shoots 87gr.cast or jacketed at least as well as my 25-20 did, plus I can shoot 100gr, (max 120ish) in the faster twist that I could not shoot in the 1:14 original type twist 25-20.
If I did a 32-20 it would be in a quicker twist than the original chambering used also, for the same reasons. I can load the 30-30 down to 32-20 anyway, or a .308 or 30-06 for that matter.
I know its not quite what you want, but it lets you play with the 'reduced load' on the cheap.

Hoping all is well with you Richard.

Thanks Frank, things are as good as can be expected.  Kathie has about 2 months of Chemo left and the Doc's say everything still looks clear so we're trying to get back to normal.

When Jason mentioned the 375 Flanged it made me think of my 38-55 which made me think of you!   ;D  How you been doon?

Well guys, I guess I don't have as big a problem as I thought.   :-[  All I need is a 357 barrel and a 30-30 barrel and 2 of the receivers are spoken for!   :D  Then I can send the remaining action to Ben and he'll feel so gratefull that, outa the goodness of his heart he'll give me enough money to pay for the 2 barrels!   8)

Ain't it just GRAND how things always seem to work themselves out!?    ;D

But then,  :-\  what if even one barrel doesn't fit any of the actions!?   :'(

Fit it!! I'd be glad to loan out my barrel fitting fixture, I don't use it any more since I have the mill, so someone should get some use out of it.  ;)

Glad to hear Kathie's doing good.

Seems to me spell check caused problems before and that's why Matt disabled it, I haven't had a problem with it since he enabled it with the last software update, but it could be browser related. But to avoid loosing a lot of keyboard work, I either save a long reply in Word, or just copy it to the clipboard just in case.

tx, Tim! atllaw said "But now I got 3 extra (Remington made) recievers in my safe with no prospects for barrels for them!" i took mean he couldn't get barrels anymore. after rereading it, i realized what he was talking about. that's a tuff spot to be in . i like the post and responses. very interesting reading for me.

Seems to me all of you are missing a very significant point ! The point is what excuse is Richard gonna have for "makin' shims" now ??? This could be disastrous !!!!  Richard said it right in the subject line   "Whut I Gonna Do Now ???
Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
