Encores/Contenders and Rebated rims.
« on: December 27, 2003, 02:55:48 PM »
Im just curious.  Could the Encore and Contender extracter handle rebated rims?  Like on the .50AE, .50 Beowulf and 41AE?  Not that Im really looking at any of those calibers for any reason, its just a curiosity thing  :-) ,
Thanks,

Wow Brian,
That's something I've never thought about. Good question, wish I had an answer. Probably not though.

Yeah Im thinking not too.  Especially now that I think about the two .50s which have a considerable rebate to them.  Oh well, with the hundreds of other chambering possibilites out there I guess I should not complain   .

Brian, I've got a 10" 50 AE barrel that shoots real good.  But like you are wondering, extraction is a hit or miss guess.  After I fire a round and break the action open, sometimes the extractor will move while leaving the case fully in the chamber.  When this happens, I close it again (the extractor moves fully inward even though the case is still there) and try again.  Usually it comes out the second try, but sometimes it takes a third.  OK for plinking at the target range but not for hunting.

Because of this problem, I sent the barrel to SSK this past summer for rechambering to 500 S&W.  JD originally thought it could be done but when he got the barrel, he recommended against it as the interior chamber dimensions would be a wisker too big.  So this barrel is for plinking only.

Maybe this is a stupid question on my part, but don't most all modern rifle calibers including all of the 30-06 and 308 based families of cartridges have what are considered rebated rims?  Now many older and/or pistol cartridges like the 45-70, 45 long colt, 44mag, etc. would seem to me to be rimmed cartridges.

I am not sure about the calibers that Brian mentioned but the Encore will handle all of the cartridges I mentioned, some of which I would consider having rebated rims.  What am I missing?

Raven,

The answer to your question is a definate no they are not a rebated rim.  A rebated rim is where the diameter of the rim is smaller than the case body.  Those that you mentioned have a rim diameter greater than the case body (not much).  In the case of the 30-06, .308 family of cases the rim is speced out at .473 diameter, whereas the body diameter is .470 just ahead of the web area.  Hope this clears it up for you.

Thanks Doc.  I see what you are talking about, there is .003 of difference between the case body and the rim on the 308 and 30-06 cartridges.  With a properly  constructed extractor, would a cartridge with a rebated rim not work in an encore or contender?

My Encore will not always extract a 25/06 cartridge, esp. when neck sized only with a tighter than virgin brass fit.  I assume a rebated rim would be worse if not impossible.

I think that the only commercially available cartridge with a rebated rim is the 284 Winchester!

My son has an Encore and Barrel from Virgin Valley chambered for this cartridge and has had no problem with it, what so ever!

Cartridge head definitions:
Rebated (284 Winchester)
Rimless (308, 30-06, etc)
Semi-Rimmed (307 Winchester)
Rimmed (30-30, etc)

Except for the 41 AE the other two are in production and readily available.  The .50 AE may net be considered a rifle round, but the Beouwulf is.
