New .500
« on: February 13, 2011, 09:47:04 AM »
I bought a new .500 barrel from frgerald and put the rifle together this morning.  The barrel jumped on the second frame I tried it on and locked up perfectly.  It's on the older style MC synthetic stock set.  Brass, bullets, scope, scope rail, hammer spur extension and cartrdidge holder are on the way.  frgerald said he didn't have any rhinos running around in his part of Texas, so he didn't need it.  Well, I've got them in our south 40, so I'd better get the loads together fast. ::) ::)

Pete,

Good thing you took up reloading because a fellow would go broke feeding a 500 S&W with factory ammo.  Let us know if it will bang the gong!

Try the 350gr JHP's over about 35gr of Lilgun per the Hodgdon website. 1697 fps from a pistol should scare about 2000 fps in a rifle. Not the hottest but a very accurate load that's not too terrible on the shoulder. Took two deer with it here in Alabama this last season.

LOL. Now that's funny stuff right there!!!!!

Pete,
I didn't start getting consistent groups till Tim turned me on to Ranger Ricks lead bullets. I have since picked up a nearly identical mold for a 440+- grain bullet that also shoots well. I swapped out the latch spring but haven't had a chance to try it again. Its my theory, that The factory latch spring is too light and it's allowing the latch to rebound with recoil causing my flyers. I have also backed off my power... I mean I am at or below starting loads and consistency in my groupings is good. Actual group sizes, ruling out those flyers is about the same. Say 2-4" at 100. I am strongly considering pruning the barrel so I get a fresh crown out of the deal. Hopefully the heavier spring will allow for stiffer loads further making up for the shorter tube.

Here's the kick in the butt.  I fell on ice in the driveway a few days ago and tore up my back and right shoulder.  I had cataract surgery on Jan 11, went back again Friday and they said I had Macular Edema, and poked a needle in my left eye.  What wonderful pain :o ::) :o ::)  Now, I have to go to Maquette in a month for tests to see if it is Macular Degeneration.  That boy aint poking no more needles in my eye.  Once was more than I can stand.  The bottom line is I shouldn't be shooting anything more than a .22.  The .500 does kick a little more, doesn't it?  I'm gonna finish putting it together, make the ammo, and have Todd Miller, my forester across the road, come and sight it in.  He's a big, strong, young guy and I can sit back and see what the recoil does to him. 8)

Good thoughts CW.  My latch engagement seems good, but I haven't smoked it.  I was wondering about pop-opens.  I guess I'll find out.  And yes, I'm gonna load light to start out with.  I've got 385 gr. Rems coming.  I haven't decided what powder to put under them yet.

I had a friend like that....let me shoot his 475 Linebaugh the first time....his 458x 2 1/4 MOA the first time...his 375 JDJ the first time..... The MOA is the only gun that has ever whacked me in the head off the bench...but not on the second shot.  I suddenly found strength in my right hand.  These things are the "zen" of shooting..you have to be in the moment and concentrate on  the target and ignore everything else, like pain, for instance.  They will either make you a better shot or induce a magnum case of flinchitis.
Good luck on that little monster..I've been torn (no pun intended) between getting one...or not.  Good luck on the eyeballs as well.

Very sorry to read of your fall and peepers problems Peter!!! Take care of your self!!!  Get that young buck behind the 500 for a session or three!!!

I haven't had any pop opens with the 500. I did a couple times in the 454 but found some fouling building at the latch and a good cleaning fixed that right up!!
My problem with the 500 remains as unexplained flyers. I'll be shooting and have two or three bullets almost touching then outta the blue a shot goes two to four inches out. Nothing I did, no flinching or jerking the trigger here. Just wild shots every third or fourth bullet. Loads don't seem to make a difference until I tried lead at lower velocities.

Shoot yours and see what happens. We can fix you up with a heavier spring easily enough it's that what's called for.

Better health to you, Pete.  Don't let that 500 tear up your mending shoulder.  Nice thing is, you can load a wide range of bullet weights with that thing.  I have always found that the Hornady Flexies shoot nicely over a medium load of Lil Gun.  Be well.

Thanks guys.  I found myself some good news this morning.  I went outside, took my glasses off and could see better with the repaired left eye than I could with my "bad" right eye.  I think it's mending.  Friday, it was the other way around before the injection.

Time for a lead sled? Or a truck tire and some bungee cords.

Ya know, that little rifle looks so sweet and demure in her stock and frame waiting for the rest of her stuff, it's hard to believe she's gonna howl worse than the injun I married when she's P.O.ed.  I talked to Todd this morning.  He's gonna shoot it and we'll have an ambulance standing by.  It oughta be pretty mild with the stock burried in a thousand pound round bale.  Man I wouldn't want a dose of scope eye off of that one.   I've got a scout scope and mount, I may just put it on there.  Anyone know how anyone can handle it out of a revolver??  I use  gloves with just my .357 Blackhawk  My .50 Kentucky pistol takes skin off if I shoot it without gloves.  A lot of that may be in the design of the trigger guards, or my hold isn't firm enough.

Sorry to hear about the tumble on the ice Pete but that's good news about the eye. :D
My dealer has a 500 on the rack and I've looked at it a couple times... I just can't seem to bring myself to drop the cash on it though. I think the biggest reason for me is the 45-70. It's just so darned good at everything. ;)

On another note....... STAY OFF THE ICE!!  You don't need to be bustin' yourself up before you even get a chance to ring the gong with the new toy. ;D

Pete,

Glad to hear the eye is mending.  After reading this thread, I'm glad I never tried to shoot that "monster."
When I bought it, I just had to have it, but afterwards, it was laying on the floor one day and as I walked by, I slipped on the carpet and before I caught myself, my left foot was jammed down into the muzzle of that HUGE bore.  Like to never got out!! ::)  ;)  My grandkids were constantly dropping their toys into the thing too!  I noticed you wanting to buy a 500 barrel so I repented of my earlier foolishness and now you got to deal with it!!!!  Besides it would have been way too loud for my neighborhood (about 1 mile off the busiest freeway in NE Texas)  LOL.  Those RR's really look cool...but where's are the fuses??  Have fun with it!
