Fair Price for H&R
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:00:01 AM »
Just wondering what you consider a fair price for a H&R with laminate stock in .223 Rem. The rifle is about 6 years old, and I would rate it about 95%. No scope or ammo with it. My FIL is needing to sell it and if the price it right I am willing to take it off his hands. Just need a fair price. I know I can get a brand new NEF Handi for $270 with a cheap scope on it at Wally World or Academy.

I don't know where you are but I paid $225 for one still as new with the box...had 10 rounds through it. They are going for about that here with no scope.  Some are asking a "dream" price, but I don't think anyone's fulfilling their dreams.

If you are sentimental or have kids your FIL's gun may be worth more.  I have two guns that were my grandad's and they will not be sold for that reason.  I also have one from my FIL that is for my girls one day.

I won't mention the price the my FIL is asking, as I consider it a little steep. If I can get him down to $225, I will be happy with it. I know what he got the gun for new, and roughly how many rounds he has shot through it. I am not going to pay him more for the gun than he paid new for it. I also do not want to take advantage of him, as he is currently in the hospital, and they need the money to pay the bills. My wife and I are doing all we can to help my father in-law and mother in-law out, but they are stubborn. I bought a .30-30 from him when my wife and I were dating, I got it for steal, but ended up giving him the scope back that was in 5 years ago to mount on the H&R. I have no clue what happened to the scope, but he no longer has it. Anyways, I would like for each of my boys to have a gun from each of their grandfathers and buying the H&R would meet my goal.

Well........you can just 'give them money' or you can buy it from him a little steep and actually have something for the money (and no 'cheapskate' feelings from him); whats that worth?

My wife and I have already bent over backwards for her parents, lot's more than I can say about her brothers. If he thinks I am being cheap, so be it, but I have cash in hand compared to his other offers wanting to pay him over time.

Well, I agreed upon on a price with my FIL for the rifle today. I gave him an offer I considered fair, along with filling his truck up with gas for my mother in-law while she was over our house today. I will either pick the gun up tomorrow or next weekend, but I am getting it! I need to find a scope and some mounts for it, and get it to the range. My FIL ended up having some ammo with it, so I am getting that as well. I now have a gun for both of my boys from each of their grandfathers, so I am happy for that.

That's the truth. I love my mother and father in-law to death, but they will cheat a cheater when it comes down to it. I got the rifle this morning, and I forgot this particular one had the bull bbl. He bought two at the same time, one for him in .30-30 and one for my brother in-law in .223. My father in-law can no longer hunt due to heart problems, so he traded my brother in-law the .223 for the .30-30. I had seen the .30-30 several times, so I knew quite a bit more about that particular rifle. I'm just happy that I met my goal of one gun from each grandad for my two boys. They can argue with each other over which particular guns they want.
