Looking for a cheap .22

I thought I posted this already, but I can't find it.  Anyway I'm looking for a cheap .22 and was wondering what people would recommend to pick up, either new or used.  I did have a remington model 597 and I really didn't like it that well, it would jam every clip, or atleast every other.  So I would like to pick up a mag fed bolt gun, or a single shot.

get yourself a marlin model 60 from walmart 119.00 I've had a bunch of them andy they are accurate and mine has never failed.

I kinda wondered about that,  it wasn't ment to be one, I would have posted a WTB in the classified if that was the case,  I was just suppose to be a looking for advise thread. 

Our walmarts around here don't sell firearms anymore saddly.

Marlin 60's are $136 at my local Academy, if you have those in your area.
Marlin has that cheaper plastic clip-fed model, but you said cheap, not cheapest.
Cheapest is probably the Mossberg at Dick's.

I bought a Remington Mohawk 10-C at Kmart in 1976 for $66 because it was the cheapest available.
Wish I had waited a couple more paydays and got a good one like the 10/22...or searched the pawn shops.

I guess I kinda need to be more specific in that I want something cheap but still shoots decent, such as "minute of tree rat".

 Watch for a used Marlin 60. Last one I got I paid $50. The Ruger 10/22 sells high even if you can find one 2nd hand. A lot of the old bolt actions were accurate(if you can find one, they are not real expensive)

The Marlins are a good choise.  In fairness, Marlin, Mossberg, and Savage all have bolt action mag fed 22lr rifles for low prices and they are all pretty good.  They aren't as nice as a Kimber 22 Mauser, but they will all put lead into a squirrel if you do your part.  All three of those companies offer something made in the USA in the $125 or $150 range.  I'm not sure what Remington offers at that price point, but they likely have something.  Henry is another option.  I've never had one of those but people who do seem to like them.

  Your best bet is to spend an afternoon driving to however many gun shops are within a reasonable distance of you.  Look at what sort of bird-in-hand options you have.  Go home, sleep on it.  Next day you go buy a rifle.  Easy as that.

Don't forget about the marlin 795 if u r wanting a clip feed gun ...I got one at dicks about a month ago for 129 and after 300 rounds or so working perfect

I would look for an old Remington 514 bolt action single shot.  We usually find them for well under $100 in pawn shops.  Every one of them that I ever shot was deadly to squirrels.  Too bad they don't still build them. 
The NEF/ H&R Sportster single shot are pretty good too.  You can find them in .22 or .22 mag.

I found an old Ranger (store brand) a number of years ago that had great looking wood, a great trigger, and dual extractors for about $70 in a gun store. It was made by Savage. Tube magazine and that thing shot like a dream. I think a lot of the old store brands are still around and they were made by major manufacturers.

A pawn shop marlin 110 ($45) and a Jimny Crickett (new $145)both have a manual cocking knob with rebounding fireing pin

mossbergg 70 somethings I forget the last numbers. I got a 17hmr on sale for 79 and just got a camo stock 22 for 115 at my local dicks store and they shoot fine

There are lots of decent 22 rifles available in the $100 to $200 range both new and used.  Most will shoot as good as the ammo used will allow you to shoot.  However,  Just about every 22 rifle I have that I have a scope on will hold around an inch or less at 50 yards with most ammo I have tried.  I have two very inexpensive rifles that I shoot a lot that cost me under $50. One is a single shot that was made in the 1930s and sold by Mongumery Wards.  This rifle has eaten thousands of rounds and with open sights will hold less than an inch group at 50 feet.  There is no provision for mounting a scope on it but then it cost me $20.  The other is an Australian made sporting rifle that cost me $25 in a hock shop.  With a cheap 4X scope on it it will shoot 1 inch groups with most ammo at 50 yards.  I also had a Savage MK I that I bought at Walmart for $105 that shot as well as my $900 target rifle. So go shopping at Pawn shops and see what you can find that might suit your needs.
