New Buffalo Carbine makes meat!
« on: January 01, 2011, 01:27:25 PM »
I shot a nice young doe this afternoon with my new BC!  300 grain XTP over 2400 powder, I'd say about 2 feet of penetration before it exited the deer, lengthwise.  :o  I worked on the factory sights and got it shooting closer to POA, it's still shooting high though.  I'm still debating whether to put the Marble's, a Williams or a scope on it though.  Something from Williams is looking pretty good though!

But, but, thet "old catrige" can't kill nothin'. :D  The old 45 does a great job and in the trim little Buff Carbine, it's one sweet package.  Congrats on the deer, and the rifle. 8)  DP

I scoped mine after sighting the irons at a hundred yards.  The scope did tighten the groups up substantially.  Really substantially.  Funny thing about it was that after zeroing it to shoot to point of aim at a hundred, we started picking out little white rocks in the berm behind the 200 yard butts, and was dinging them with regularity, with just a scoche of holdover.
Haven't taken the time yet to see what the trajectory looks like in between to see how high the rainbow goes.  BTW, the load was 250 gr. Nosler with 2400.  I'm looking for a lace-on cheek piece for it, might have to make one, as I detest having to hold my face that far off the stock to shoot with the scope.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

What'd you shoot that little thing for? It's just barely out of spots. :-\
You'll be lucky to get 25 pounds of meat out of it.
Nice rifle though.

That canned venison is some good stuff, did a whole deer in Nov. Yesterday did another 14 qts, just put them on the shelf. Got alittle to much salt in the first batch so cut the salt in half this time around. This is my first year doing it. Shot 4 deer this year, so this is a good way to keep 2. Zeak

I shot end to end one time with a Speer 300SP. From my Marlin 45COLT and 296 powder. Bullet entered in the hind "eye" actually came out in front of ham where stomach was "hollow" re entered at the ribs and exited inthe neck. Bang flop. I watched the hole thing as my pop made the shot with my gun. Small deer maybe 100#.

Small, yeah, but they eat great. A number of similar critters are shot for meat in various parts of the world where the big whitetail sized animals are rare or not found.
May your next one be a bragger.

I shoot year and a half old does every chance I get.  They're the best venison, next to fawns.  I have in years past shot fawns and button bucks by accident.  Usually they showed up alone with nothing for size comparison, and I didn't feel great about it, but I ate them.  Another time, I shot an adullt doe and didn't realize she had a fawn until after I pulled the trigger.  I wasn't happy about that either.  I try to be more careful in my old age.

I usually don't shoot does but I took a mature doe this year for my uncle. He broke his pelvis a while back and is hobbling around with 2 walking sticks. One shot with a 45gr. bullet from my 22 Hornet Handi and it's backstraps in the freezer. ;D She dressed out at 137 pounds.
My uncle was happy to get the meat. ;)

A 300 grain bullet over 2400 is perfect for 45LC.  That what I use in my Blackhawk, and it never fails to make meat.  It's got to be even better from the carbine.

Suggestion:  Get the bullet hitting where you aim, exactly where you aim.  Holdover for those longer shots will come much easier if you know for sure where you are hitting at a given distance.  If I had a BC carbine, I'd zero it for 50 yards.

FWIW, at whatever distance I expect my -0- to be, I like the bullet to impact right at the top of the front blade/bead. With decent practice the eye will try to automatically align the sight picture and you dont have to think about trajectory calculations unless it is away on out there.
I my later years I have concluded the iffy long shot doesnt serve me, or the animal, well. It is not a survival situation for me and I have learned I have limitations. One big one is that I do not want to spend the rest of the day tracking a poorly hit critter.
This is not at all to be critical of those who do take long shots and know their gun; its just me and I feel better knowing Ive thought through what I can deal with.

I do the same thing.  I'm too old to be tracking wounded critters around in a night woods.

Amen brother!!!

Good ol' Clint said it best . . . "A mans gotta know his limitations"  Truer words have not been spoken.

I caught some flack a short time ago stating that my maxi was a 125 yard deer rifle. My reasoning was that we OWE it to the game we hunt to make clean quick humaine kills. I stand by that statement.

Congrats on the deer, nice looking handi!!!

+1 on knowing limitations, and the great comraderie here in the handi forum.

There is no group of folks on any forums I have seen that treat each other with the same courtesy and respect I have seen here. Way to go folks.
