500 S&W is in!
« on: December 16, 2010, 10:48:19 AM »
At least my FFL has it!   ;D  I don't know when I'll pick it up... Next gun show maybe...  :-\  No hurry.  Got no dies, brass, bullets or suitable powder.   :(  Don't got no money either... even the funds I had saved up to send my M7 to Shaw got gone...  :'(  This addiction sure be gettin 'spensive...  :(

But there's a bright side!  My boy will be bringing down the .223 Heavy Barrel I bought when he comes home for Christmas!   ;D  And I got 3 or 4 K of 5.56 ammo!  WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' DIES!   :D

New toys drain the bankin' 'count fast.  I'm in the same boat.  I haven't been able to buy any new toys in a couple of years.

Well congrats Richard, at least you're buying a Handi in the logical sequence of a purchase, I was shopping at BiMart one day, and they put a bunch of clearance items on the gun counter while I was there, an RCBS 500S&W steel die set for $12  and a couple boxes of Hornady 350gr .500" XTPs for $11 each among the other bullets I just had to have, at the time I didn't even have any intention of buying a 500 S&W, but I couldn't pass it up, I bought a barrel from the classifieds here not much later!  ::) :D

when the projects end up being a case of the "tail wagging the dog"?
Never in my life did it occur to me to have or even contemplate a .303 British ANYTHING.
Ended up having a fella give me (as in zero dollars) a Smellie the other day.  Occured to me that I actually had an ancient set of RCBS dies, but no guts, so I needed to buy parts to get them up to snuff.  Then I discovered a baggie in a box-o-stuff that had 13 once fired cases, and an unopened box of Hornady 150 gr. spire points......and I don't even LIKE the stinkin' thing!
Then there was the time I was given a McMillan stainless .22-250 Ackley Imp. barrel for a 1903 Springfield......$140 for a set of dies and a whole pile of brass and then a stock, and then glass...
And NOW, one of my sons got a letter from the city tellin' him he's gotta get rid of a couple of cars, and I'm the proud owner of a '69 Mustang shell.  At LEAST there's a title for the thing, and this time, Mrs. Walton has decided that she'd look good in a bright red Mustang.  This project might get pricey!!!
Oh, yeah, almost forgot, you'll LIKE the .500!
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Richard,

You gotta' .500?  You gonna' make that 45-120 jealous!  I guess next you'll have to ream it to 50-90.  In the meantime, If you want I'll be glad to babysit some of those lonesome barrels you got.......like a 45-120.  Now THAT would get some attention from the guys at the range.  Of course none of them will shoot my stuff anymore.........don't know why. ???

My FFL emailed me today.  His words were: "the bore on that thing is huge!  I don't know which end would hurt more!"   :D

The 500 S&W is a little to stubby for my taste.   :-\  But the .500 bore diameter stops me from reaming it out to one of the Sharps cart-a-ges since they are around .510 bore.   :(  That's really a shame since I'd settle for a 50-90 in a heartbeat!   ;D

I'd consider reaming it to the 50 B&M Alaskan which is the 50 Alaskan necked down to .500 caliber.  BTW, they call it B&M for "bowel" and "movement" 'cause it kicks the crap outa you!   ::)  Hi-ebber, and day always be a hi-ebber, there's no need to even consider that since there aren't any .500 diameter, 550 +/- gr. solids around anyway.   :(  Darn S&W  >:(  Why couldn't they have made it with a .510 bore!   :(

Guess I'll just use it for squirrels and such...  :-\

Look at it compared to some real 50 cals!   ;D

The White brand muzzleloading boolits are .501 diameter and weigh 440 grs. They are dead soft lead but under 10 grains of Unique powder and a Winchester rifle primer, the gun is a creampuff to shoot and
will cut a ragged hole. It's hard to say how small the group is when your boolit is half an inch across and the holes are all touching one way or the other!

If all you are going to do is ream, then that 50 bowel movement Alaskan sounds good.  But, try it as a 500 Smith for a while, you might like it.  If any pistol cartridge should be in a rifle, this is it.

Add the 500 Martin to your list

Done!   ;D

http://ammoguide.com/cgi-bin/aicompare.cgi?sn=BgdCQSRIpk&editord=1

That's an interesting round.  I thought it was the same as the B&M but AmmoGuide shows it more if a streight taper then necked.   :-\  If so, I LIKE IT!   ;D

But we still have the problem of no .500 diameter solids with a SD of around 300...  :(  Without that our 45-120's are still the big DG thumpers!

'course, like JeffD and YM point out there is plenty of oportunity for lite loads.   :-\  So I'm gonna do like G-o-F says and play with the factory round.  No doubt I will like it!   ;D  'sides, it'll be nice to have a soft kicking big bore...  8)

That 700 gr Ranger Rick in the 500 S&W rifle should make a dandy car gun. That is, if you have wild packs of Buicks and Oldsmobiles roaming your neighborhood! ;D

Okay, so they got heavy, hard bullets...  ::)  Now, if they was jacketed solids and you could drive them to, say 1800 fps outa the S&W, then I might be interested... (yawn...  8))

No Brie, not yet.   :(  My FFL has it and I'll pick it up from him at the next gun show.  I gotta get set up to reload and do some stock switching so I won't be able to shoot it for a while anyway...  :(  I'm gonna put the stock from my 45-120 on it, the one you put the Limbsaver on, and the stock from the 500 on my 223 and get another stock from GSI for the 45-120!   ;D

I got it all figured out!   :D

Wait...  :-\  I got another stock coming from a member...  :-\  I was going to cut it down for my eldest G'son and put it on my BC Carbine... But I should do that next year just before season...  :-\  I guess I gotta rethink this a bit...  ::)

'course in the meantime I could just get another barrel and action to go on the stock set...   ;D

Richard,
with a set of custom dies and a custom reamer  you could make this for your Handi to go with the 45-120.Just order the reamer and dies to fit the barrel bore. Maybe call it the 500 Atlaw ;D
