best taurus handguns for deer hunting
« on: December 13, 2003, 07:39:20 PM »
in decreasing pricing? got lots of great input on handgun hunting in iowa--best consensus gun seems to be ruger super blackhawk. my stepson's dad uses taurus handguns and this is what he wants (despite my input based on knowledge obtained from board) so that is what I want to get him for CHRISTmas. i have never hunted very much but stepson has always went with his dad when he is at his place. his dad is in iraq with military so i volunteered to take him hunting this winter (i've loved being outdoors and spending time with my stepson) but I know very little about hunting.
wished i had started hunting earlier. would any of them be good for him to carry while bird hunting in case run across a deer during deer season? he likes to bird hunt the best but we are doing some deer hunting. are any of them set up where you can get different barrel lengths--interchangeable sizes?

thanks for the input and education. (hope my questions don't show lack of knowledge too much!--at least I will be learning!)

You should be looking at the Taurus Trackers and the Raging Bull in .44RemMag. These do come in varying barrel lengths BUT they ARE NOT change barrel guns You want to look here:
http://www.taurususa.com/products/gunselector-results.cfm
This the page to search for a lists of all the Taurus .44RemMag revolvers.
I have three Taurus revolvers all in .41RemMag, a 415SS2C, 416SS6 and a 425SS4 the last two being fine hunters. I’m sure your young man will like any Taurus you get for him. I know that Christmas gifts are supposed to be a surprise BUT you may really want to bring him and let him pick the Taurus he wants rather than having to make do with your idea of what he wants. Just my lowly $.02
.
Love those .41s'

Pistol for deer hunt
« Reply #2 on: December 14, 2003, 12:46:22 PM »
I hunt Iowa for deer with a pistol. Plan on using one late muzzel season.
A super black hawk is a favorite, I have one 7.5" with a 2x nikon on it. I have a taurus m 44 8+" with a red dot, and my favorite a redhawk 5.5" which is my carry gun. All are in 44 mag. The reason for the scope and the red dot is when you pass the 50 most of us can't focus the rear sight, front sight to the target with longer barrels. Even though Iowa law allows a min of 357/4" barrel and our av shot is -60yds I would recomend the 44 mag use any jhp or jsp 240 grn bullet and you are good to go. As for hunting pheasants during deer season I doubt you will see one close enough for a hand gun shot, if you see one. And if you did it would very interesting to watch from a far.

With the current quality problems Taurus seems to be having and in light of the poor customer service I've gotten on this latest piece of junk of theirs I bought I'd think twice about ordering one sight unseen and being stuck with buying it when it arrives. If you can look at it and check it over before you plunk down your money to be sure the really obvious bad things I've experienced with my last two aren't present then it might not be too bad to get one.

I think if you are going for a .44 mag and I would, then the M44 will save money and still do the job nicely. However both of my RBs are mighty fine guns but then I've heard others say theirs weren't so I'm not sure buying an RB is insurance against getting a bad one.

As an owner of both Ruger and Taurus firearms I would recommend the following if you would wish to scope your handgun one day:

http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=862&return=Y
If optics are not required:

http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=810&return=Y

Besides the quality issues, I'll not be purchasing any Taurus firearms for the following reason:
http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/7383979.htm
They have sold out to the enemy and deserve the same fate as the ex owners of S&W.
Doin' my best to keep up with Maryland's one handgun a month law.

Lloyd I jist tell it lak it is. I think I've woken them up. Just got off the phone with the head of customer service. Even after a seriously long and loud rant (mine) he didn't hang up and is paying to take this latest one back yet again. I'll bet when (IF) it comes back it ain't the same next time.

I have one of the Ruger special run SS 5.5" in .45 Colt. I like it. Can you belive me liking a Ruuuugggggeeerrr? Yup I shore do. Almost makes me wish I'd have gotten the one they had in .41 mag but then I'm really not a fan of that round. If it had been a .44 mag I likely would have.

I've been of the unsubstantiated opinion that they put more quality into the raging bulls than the other guns in their line.  I could be wrong, but that's the way it seems.

my dad loves my RB 454 and is itching to buy one in 44... I hate to second guess this company   WE'll see I guess. I think that he is going to get one no matter what I say ( I would still buy one/recomend one because I have not had problems with the ONE that I have). I hope All is cleared up with you Graybeard. If not, I don't blame you one bit for boycotting a company that has done you wrong. I guess we will see what comes out of all of this. I'll let you know how his is.

By the way, when I first shot my 454, 2 rounds in one cylinder did not fire. I was about to throw the gun back at the shop owner (Just kidding). Upon inspection, I had hard hits on both primers, but the primers did not look the same as the others in the box. They were completly flat on the outside (this is hard to explain) the primers were not rounded on the edges. they were sharp and looked like too close of a fit in the case if you know what I mean. I have no idea what the problem was, but the primers were very different from fired and unfired primers. i knwo that this was not the problem that Graybeard had (multiple ammo checks), but I wanted to share what happened to me. Later!
Cheers,
Willis5

its nice to see honesty in this day of advertising and kickbacks pal!. I have one in .44 too and its the most accurate out of the box ruger ive ever owned. I may buy a .41 too but i have a few .41s already and ill probably get roasted for this but i dont much care for the round either. Ive watched many animals that were shot with .41s 44s and .45 and i have to say that the two bigger ones do kill better. Now if theyd just make it in .480 theyd really have something.

None of the gun manufacturers are advertisers on this site and none give me anything for free. I owe them nothing more than what I owe the readers here and that's the truth as I see and know it. Just because someone advertises here still don't mean I owe them more than the truth.

I once used the .41 mag to finish off a wounded hog. I sure wasn't impressed with the results. I'm thinking the new Winchester 240 grain load might make it into a better round. As would cast bullets in that weight range or heavier IF the gun will stabilize them. It has just never done much for me even tho I've owned a couple of guns and a TC barrel in the caliber.

I have a taurus tracker in 357 with 6'' ported barrel and taurus mount with a red dot on it and I shot two deer this year with it. I haven't had a problem with mine.I also think the gp100 would be a good one in 357.I think the 357 is good to start with for people who haven't had alot of handgun experience.Keep the range reasonable and shoot where you are supposed to and you have plenty of gun. I've seen adults shoot 44 terribly with little experience and full loads. The police departments realized this years ago.Believe me I have nothing against the 44 its great just don't let people tell you that you can't use a 357. Good Luck. :-)
