TRUE GRITS--NO NOT THE MOVIE
« on: December 15, 2010, 05:14:23 AM »
Just Got a Country ham sent to me by Mike(MDCAT)_thanks Mike and Peggy. In the box were a couple of other Southern food items I have never eaten--Instant Grits. I had never heard of such a thing. I have heard of True Grit(John Waynes only academy award) plus the new remake of that movie--starring Jeff Bridges,I have heard of sanpaper grit, but never in all my days did I expect to see--packets of Instant Grits.
Now comes my question--when do you eat grits? Are they a breakfast item? Are they a snack item? Do they relieve constipation or irregularity?Just what are grits?
Please let me know,as I plan to give these things a try--How are they with maple syrup on top?
 Help--most trapping questions I can answer---Now I need help.

I don't like instant grits...  :(  Won't eat 'em unless they fresh picked from the garden...  ;D

Instant grits suck.  Real grits are better.  Eat at breakfast.  Hardcore southern is to eat with nothing on them.  Can't do it... never could.  Ohhh, it's food alright but it needs somethin'... like some butter or suger or both.

All grits suck and I've lived here all my life.  I like them with sugar and butter but don't ever tell anyone you eat them that way.

You all still haven't said what grits is??? Animal? Vegtable? Small Metorites?   I'm guessing vegtable just because AtlLaw said best fresh form the garden.
But I must confess like Tom I have no idea what they really are?

"Hominy grits, or just plain grits, are an institution here in the South, though they can be hard to find in northern states. Hominy is made from flint or dent corn, varieties with hard kernels that are dried on the cob then removed and soaked in a solution of baking soda, lime, or wood ash. This process causes the hulls to soften and swell. The kernels are then hulled and degermed using friction, then dried. Grits, coarse whitish grains, are ground from hominy, as is masa harina, the flour used to make corn tortillas."

Grits is good anytime but you see them mostly on the breakfast menue.  In basic form I eat mine with butter.  Where they grow peanuts I've seen people eat grits with peanut butter.

My favorite is cheese grits and there's a bisquit shop down the street from me that serves the best sausage grits you ever wrapped your gums around!   ;D

I also like to mix my soft cooked eggs up with grits.  Yup, next to beer, grits just might be nature's most perfect food!   :D

I can eat grits anytime of day.  Just a little butter and salt.  If I feeling really spry, I add cheese.  Scramble up a few eggs, stir in a cup of grits, and a couple cat's head biscuits.

Man I'm getting hungry! ???

I think we'll have breakfast stuff tonight.......... ;D

I had no idea all folks don't know grits. I once was in a small diner near Atlanta, about 0300,asked for breakfast, the gal told me I could have eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, gravy, biscuits or toast but I couldn't have breakfast cause the grits aint done yet! Another nice use; let leftover grits stiffen up,then slice about 3/4 inch thick and fry in a little bacon grease, cover with old bay saute'd shrimp, and an alfredo type sauce over the top and you have a reasonable facsimile of southern shrimp & grits. Also,no joke, some great carp dough(thats BAIT for y"all folks that don't know grits!)can be made from dry grits and ketchup.

Ya know, I always wondered about frying grits...  :-\  Mexicans fry beans and I hear yankees fry up chunks of potatoe for breakfast.  But I always figgured the grits would resoften and fall apart.   :(

We lead a sheltered life --here in Minnesota. Never saw bisquits and gravy, till a Shoney's opened up a few miles away in Wisconsin. But grits were not on the menue.
Now I see Bisquits and gravy offered at most conventions I do, and most are not southern conventions.
Funny how taste buds are satisfied, from one part of the country to the next.

I've ate my grits the same way with butter & sugar most of my life and throughout the years, I always wondered why some folks put cheese in their grits. I never did like cheesy grits.

I was raised on grits(true grits), corn bread, honey, black eye peas and butter.  There were a few other items my mother brought with her when she left Alabama, okra, and egg plant.  The last two have never stuck with me.

The wife and kids never cared for grits, but I like them and if I want grits I eat instant, with butter or gravy along with a couple of eggs on them with a generous shot of salt and paper.

About once a month the (step) father-in-law and I go out for breakfast.  He is a biscuit and gravy man.  Depending on where we go I will have grits rather than hash browns.

Lordy, lordy, the first time i had grits  i was on my way back to base  in North Carolina from leave after coming back from Viet Nam.  It was about 3 in the morning and i got  off in changing buses and went into a resturant.  The ol southern gal  said i had to try grits!   I said what are grits and of course she explained and i said  serve them up.   Now  i swore  it was cream of wheat.....  it was served with  milk like a hot cereal.  Anyway it was okay and  never had them again and that was back in 1968!!   Not that i didnt like them , just never had  the cause or place to order them again...
