BIG Kudos for Wayne York
« on: December 14, 2010, 01:44:21 PM »
My 50 Alaskan (formerly 45LC CR) is finally on it's way home from Wayne's shop.  It has been a long and winding road that I was forced down because of H&R's sloppy chambering of my rifle.  I first sent it to Wayne to have it reamed to 454 Casull.  When I got it back, I found that the higher pressure caliber bulged cases - NOT WAYNE"S FAULT - strictly a sloppy original chamber from H&R.  So, Wayne took it back and converted, complete with cut-rifle rebore, to 50 Alaskan.  He completely deducted the cost of the original chamber work.  You can't go wrong with Mr. York on your side.  He is one generous and honest guy.  BTW, he test fired the 50 Alaskan - and he chuckled on the phone, saying it was a "fun" little gun to shoot.  I can hardly wait.   THANK YOU, Wayne!

Hmmm, I wonder why he chuckled...Was it a full power load? Does it have the BC buttstock on it still?

Thanks, Dinny

50 AK is based on the 348 Win.

It is another one derived from the 348 winchester - straightened out to accept a .510 diameter bullet.  It looks very similar to a 45-70 - only .510 instead .458 in diameter.  Needless to say, it can shoot some real bruisers.  Originally developed to stop big brown bears in their tracks.  Fun in a little carbine!  Pressures, IIRC, are similar to 45-70 pressures.  Big bullets, not so terribly fast - but penetrate very well...to say the least.  I now have accumulated a bunch 500 grain plus hardcast, and even some hefty jacketed bullets and 150 starline cases.  Ready to rock and roll!

I see Tim already answered - anyway - here's a little more info.

Dinny - it will be wearing a handi-grip thumbhole buttstock and a choate syn forend. I want to be able to hold on to that bad boy!  The CR stocks are now on a 20 gauge turkey gun that wears a 22-inch full choke barrel.  That little guy looks like something straight out of the 19th century now.  The 50 Alaskan is a modern wildcat anyway...so I don't feel bad about it looking modern - and mighty light and handy (but do fasten seat belt before firing!).

g-o-f,

A fellow at the range last year had a Martini (i believe it was, bad memory) chambered in 50 Alaskan.  I didn't shoot it but held and shouldered it and it was a heavy gun.  The gun's owner chuckled everytime he fired it.  I was shooting my 22" Handi 45/70 and by 32" BC 45/70 (pre 45-120 days).  I asked him about recoil of his 50 and he said it wasn't bad in his gun but after watching me shoot he wouldn't want to fire a 50 alaskan out of a Handi rifle.

Wayne's done a bit of work for Tim, and did Tims 6x45 for us.  He's a prince of a man to work with.  Der aint no better.  He's extremely helpful and considerate.  His work is superb and his rechambers/rebores are accurate.....sub MOA.  If I could figure out how to politely do it, I'd marry the guy....can't type no more!!!! Patty's beatin' me on the head.

I was wondering the same thing!  Not to mention the cost of the reamer!   :o

That might be just the thing to cure my 50-140 desire!   ;D  Probably could use 50 AK load data and there seems to be a much better selection of .500 diam. bullets out there then there is .510-.515!  And my 500 S&W is enroute to my FFL as we type!   ;D

Not to take any business away from Wayne, but every time I start addding up the cost of a donor barrel and Wayne's work I have to seriously ask myself how bad do I really want a 50-140...  :-\  Shock & Awe and self abuse only go so far in dollars!   :P

I started with a .45-70 BC, and had NEF put a .500 barrel on it.  Cute little bugger, and the recoil with them 500 gr. Hornady's don't hurt toooooooo bad.  Just don't shoot a whole box of 'em in one sit-down!

I have to confess that when I actually shoot that cute little period piece of a turkey gun, especially with 3-inch turkey loads, I slip on a limbsaver.  I do have a certain tendency to bursitis in my right shoulder - so I can't take the metal buttplate.

I just went to ammoguide and got the numbers for the comparison Tim was talking about.

velocity    energy          bullet weight    case capacity
50AK              1908        3927ft/lb        490gr               87.5gr
500S&W          1801        2554ft/lb        358gr               64.8gr
45-70              1764        2622ft/lb        379gr               72.5gr

These are average numbers for all the listed loads for each.
It looks like the 50AK should be quite a thumper. :o

Ive seen the stock split on a custom 45-70 Siamese Mauser shooting 458 Win. Mag. equiv. loads. I wonder how long a Handi stock will last with these? Visions of toothpicks dance through my head....Oh, come on boy! do it with a BC stock and show us what you are made of!

Tyler's 45-120 BC indeed has the original furniture on it, plus an MRR and recoil pad which he had installed before he ever shot it, here' the video he posted.

Tyler is my hero! ;D

I shoot my 45-120 with laminated furniture, stock channel full of lead, factory recoil pad with a slipon limbsaver pad over the factory pad and a Past Magnum recoil pad strapped to my shoulder.  I now have an Ammoguide acct. so it will be time to play when the weather breaks. ::)
