45 70 and the Daughter
« on: December 11, 2010, 10:47:37 AM »
I took my 5' 2" 90 lb daughter shooting. She was shooting the 45 70. Standard plain jane nuthin fancy 22" barrel. She dinged milk jugs at 75 paces no problem.
The load was 405 gr cast bullet and 12 grains of unique powder.

The big ear to ear grin told me I would have to get her a handi :D

Every young daughter needs a 45 70 for Christmas. That 405 gr bullet is a hoot to shoot with 31 gr of 4198 at around 1415. It is my favorite shooting Handi. Just put a new set of BC wood on it, that I purchased from Spanky. Don't let her ask for one
for Christmas. Just go ahead and get it.
                                     Merry Christmas to you.

TB makes the 45-70 very versatile. We wanted to take ours to the woods for rabbits loaded with that load of TB. Sure won't ruin any more meat than my .54 flintlock..... And when cranked up to a 405 remington with 4198 you can knock down most anything! Congrats on a fun day shooting!  thejanitor

How many guns are suitiable for kids to shoot, then the old man can take it out for Grizzly or Moose?

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

My daughter will be getting a handi for CHRISTmas. Just deciding between the 357 and the 45 70 is the hard part. She did like that 45 70 her complaint was weight of the gun. A trapper would be a great one.

Merry CHRISTmas all!!!

Hey- Thanks for keeping CHRIST in CHRISTmas! Good luck deciding on the gun, it is a win win either way. I had added weight to the stock on my 45-70 to counter the 405gr petemi load, but after carrying the gun everyday of the MN season I will not weight the stock again, just going to change the scope to a fwd mount ahead of the hammer. To keep it from smacking me . . Again  ::).
I wouldn't make it too light or she will be a flincher from recoil. You may be better off going with the .357 so you can keep it light and she doesn't dread pulling the trigger. If you make the 45-70 as light as you can it will hurt a smaller person with a good hunting load. Just my thought.
Merry Christmas-  thejanitor

Try a youth stock for her may be a better fit. I love it a 5'2" 90lbs girl shooting the 45-70 I took mine to deer camp this year and all my buddies took one look at the shells and said that thing must kick like a mule. I said with the right load it can if you want it to, but none of them would shoot it.

I have a 376 steyr and a 458, I let anyone shoot them that wants to. I advise on recoil level first.
I have of course let Mr. Iam so awsome recoildontmatter shoot the 458. He put it down after 1 shot. I guess it needed to rest.
I wouldn't let her shoot anything that would hurt. Got to keep that shooting partner shooting.
I think the 357 will be good for her. She says that 45 70 is heavy.

I recently got a 44 mag on an sb1 frame, I am not sure if there is much weight difference between the SB1 and SB2 but with all synthetic it is very light compared to all the rest with wood stock sets especially the lams. After I find a synthetic youth  butt stock it will even be lighter and very "extra layers of hunting clothes" friendly. So who ever shoots it will like the shorter stock in the cold season.  I don't believe I would do this type stock to my 45-70 as it would make me flinch with hunting loads, but for the gun it is on I am very happy with the weight, my daughter should be able to use it if she wants and have no issue with holding it up for a minute to shoot if she has no shooting rail or shooting stick.  thejanitor

The 44 is a great suggestion also. Thanks guys.

I was teaching her to drop to a knee for a fast rested shot. Shooting sticks will be a bit down the road.

If you hadn't guessed I am proud of her!!!

She did say dad I'll shoot with you anytime but I don't want to kill anything. I am still proud of her. Her not hunting has never been an issue.
