I have both the 45/70 and 460 in the Katahdin setups, I have taken deer with the 45/70 using both the Hornady bullets and Remington 300 grain hp, just got the 460 over winter so I haven't had a chance to try it out on anything yet but accuracy is really good using the Hornady pistol ammo. The only real swaying point for me would be availability of ammo, where I live in VT the 460 ammo is pretty scarce, but 45/70 is easily available.

I've zero experience with a 460 or 450, but to date, i've found absolutely nothing that the 45-70 can't do and do pretty darn well.  I got a 18" Kathadin barrel for my Encore a few years back with the idea of cutting off the muzzle tamer and using it as a 16.5" pistol barrel, but it's so much fun as an Encore carbine I've left it as is.  I still think I would rather have the newer version w/o MT. 8)

I have always been interested in the 45/70 as a cartridge. It's OLD. Last year I picked up a 45/70 20" Pro Hunter barrel for my Encore. To my surprise it is the most accurate barrel out of my group which includes the 7mm Rem. Mag., and a .300 Win Mag.
The little barrel really likes the Hornady 300 gr. Leverevolution ammunition. Will group 1/2" at 100 yds with it. I mounted a Leupold 2.5 X 8 on the little carbine and it is a joy to carry, shoot and hunt with.

Try one, if you get as luck as I did, you'll love it.

Little different here, open treeless mtn range.300 yd shot is common.  I use a 16 1/4" and 21" in 308 or a 20" in 243 for deer.

Don't know who coined the phrase "smack down"....but he had to be a 45-70 shooter. ::)
