Malcolm scope/BC experience? anyone?
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:05:39 PM »
Has anyone had any experience with the Wm. Malcolm scope mounted to a BC? I saw it, looks cool, but is the quality and function really worth the price?

They are cool looking and the quality is good and they are pricey don't know anybody here that has bite the bullet yet on one but if you go to the Sharpes forum you should be able to get a decent answer. Just don't tell them you are gonna put it on a H&R ;D Kurt

Having had a 'long tube' scope for a while, and a friend who still does (on a repro roller 45-70) there are a few considerations many dont think about.
With that long tube the scope gets in the way for 'normal' gun racking, even standing in a corner, etc. For bench racks you need an extra cutout for the tube to stand the rifle properly in. You can made a nice custom one of wood, with a padded felt srtip, to c-clamp to a benchtop. Sure beats having the whole thing falling out and over......
The mounts get this type of scope pretty well up off the gun. Elevation is accompished by raising the rear adj.,thus the scope too. Even at a 100yd. setting your cheek will likely be well off the comb, and it gets higher from there. To padd the comb up works, but ruins the classic look that you may have been trying for.
They are fine optics, though, no fault there. Keep in mind that the old timers went to shorter scopes asap, as they became available, for good reasons. Once the lens problems were overcome for shorter tubes the scopes became better.

You will need barrel blocks to mount the scope. This is the place for all things in blocks. http://www.steveearleproducts.com/index.html

A Unertl 24X is very cool!

A Lyman STS is also pretty cool!

A Redfield 3200 is long, but has internal adjustments.

As for racking your gun, most guys carry the scope in a storage bax, and attach it when they are shooting

The Winchester Sutler carries mounts specific for the BC.

Thanks for the input concerning funtionality. Originality and "cool" factor is what got my attention. Now I can slow down and really think about this.

Thanks,
Jeff

+1 on Steve Earl, a real gentleman and skilled machinist. His stuff is first class AND reasonably priced. If you have a need for special, custom blocks for vintage target scopes he may already have them or will work with you to make them at a price you can afford.

If you are into the cool factor, and not up to the cost of a Malcolm you might try a tube sight.you will still need the external adjustable mounts. try this one

Tasco, and maybe the same scope came under another name, had a long and short 3/4" brass tube scope some years back. Dixie used to sell them, price was reasonable, but the mounts were junk. The optics were OK on the couple Ive seen, about 4X, and in decent mounts they work. These still turn up at G shows, and I suppose, online. $100 would be about right unless they have high quality mounts. Those alone can be $150 a set, bases often another $30ish, then the D/T for four screws.
Finding the scope is just the beginning.......
Oh, I just remembered, most of those type scopes have a pretty short eye relief and must slide in the mounts to prevent damage to you and recoil impulse damage to the mounts. In a heavy kicker they can break the mounts if cinched down tight.
