Having had a 'long tube' scope for a while, and a friend who still does (on a repro roller 45-70) there are a few considerations many dont think about.
With that long tube the scope gets in the way for 'normal' gun racking, even standing in a corner, etc. For bench racks you need an extra cutout for the tube to stand the rifle properly in. You can made a nice custom one of wood, with a padded felt srtip, to c-clamp to a benchtop. Sure beats having the whole thing falling out and over......
The mounts get this type of scope pretty well up off the gun. Elevation is accompished by raising the rear adj.,thus the scope too. Even at a 100yd. setting your cheek will likely be well off the comb, and it gets higher from there. To padd the comb up works, but ruins the classic look that you may have been trying for.
They are fine optics, though, no fault there. Keep in mind that the old timers went to shorter scopes asap, as they became available, for good reasons. Once the lens problems were overcome for shorter tubes the scopes became better.
