Accuracy ques in a 4" Ruger Redhawk in .44 magnum
« on: November 28, 2003, 06:40:14 PM »
I shoot a variety of loads out of this handgun and haven't settled on one final loading yet.  I am getting a mixed bag of results as to accuracy depending upon the load as well.

When it was 7" I could keep 6 rounds inside 1.5" off a bench at 50 yards using a 4x scope.  Now it has a 4" barrel and a post and V-notch rear sight.

What kind of accuracy would you EXPECT out of this firearm at 50 yards now?

Thanks for any input!

With me pulling the trigger about 6" groups. I just don't shoot short barrels with iron sights well. If the cut off and crowning job was well done the intrinsic accuracy of the barrel should not have suffered. BUT there is a BIG difference between using a scope and using iron sights on a short barrel gun.

If you want "sure 'nuff" accuracy in any barrel length, get a Dan Wesson.  Then you can switch back and forth between the iron sighted 4" and the scoped 8" in less than 5 minutes.  This is with no loss in zero on the scope and no loss of accuracy with a shorter barrel.

Instead of a post up front you should use a bead to shoot with that v-notch rear sight.

Either way, you took a step back from accuracy by going with open sights.   The shorter barrel producing less velocity will also keep the revolver from shooting as flat at the longer ranges.....making range estimation more important.

I'd guess that with good eyesight, with a post up front, and a Square Notch for a rear sight that one could get 2 to 3 inch groups at 50 yds' out of this revolver.      With a bead up front, and a  v-notch in the rear one might learn to shoot the same size groups at 50 yds, but it might take more practice to learn a consistent 'sight picture' which is no problem with a post and square notch set up.

Good Luck.
