500 S&W
« on: June 26, 2010, 10:53:27 AM »
Well I had my Handi 500 S&W out the other day and things are starting to look a little better with this rifle. I mounted a 4x nikon buckmaster scope on it, with warren steel rings and base, and added the new handi grip stock to it. I used some insulating foam and a long bolt to the butt stock and this added a little weight to the gun to aid in recoil. this is the 3rd scope I've had on this gun and it is holding up so far after shooting 30 rounds. I was shooting some of my reloaded 350gr XTP's, some remingtons 385gr JHP, and 440gr CPWFPGC. There is still some recoil, but my shoulder did not hurt at all after this shooting session. I think the butt stock and pad had alot to do with the felt recoil. I was shooting at 50 yards and wasn't really trying for great groups , just get on the paper and see what happens. The scope adjusted pretty good and the XTP's shot ok, then the Remingtons shot ok also, but the 440gr CP did better. It took me awhile since it is so warm outside and the barrel on the rifle was getting pretty hot. So I will probably sight in later on when it is cooler and use the CP 440gr bullets only......

Nice to hear it's coming together for ya..Looking forward to getting set up to do some loading for mine..I filled the butt stock on mine with 2 part epoxy and added a pound of lead to it..Works like a charm now..Looking forward to you reports on how it's coming along for you.

I think the butt stock and pad had alot to do with the felt recoil.

I added 20oz of shot to the stock of a 20g Tracker II and also added a Limbsaver Slip-on Pad, and that accomplished the same thing for me that you have achieved with the 500 S&W.

What intrigues me is that a stock change could have as much impact as a slip-on pad had on mine. I think there is a big lesson there for those of us who don't care for recoil and would like to shoot the heavier loads.

Thanks for that report and insight.

Has anyone else done a stock change and got a result like that?

Was that just poured into the bolt hole and allowed to set up?
If so, how will you ever get to the stock bolt should you ever have to remove it?
Just wondering.

Yup..got basically the same stock and the exact same recoil pad on my 870..it works just like they said it does. Also have the Handi-grip and new recoil pad on my 30-06..works like a charm.

The bolt hole is on the outside on my Handi-Grip stock It's in the hand grip section on the rear. This is what the OP is using as well...These have just one large closed cavity behind the recoil pad..so you still can access everything when changing stocks.

Friend of mine with a a Rossi put a pvc pipe down (fitted around the bolt) in his and filled around it with foam and then filled the pipe with lead. The buttstock was totally hollow before that.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
