New .223?
« on: June 23, 2010, 12:16:52 PM »
Local Walmart has one for $255, pallet wood stock with scope and rails. No distinguishing marks on scope, but it is a 3-9 power variable.  How are the newer models of these? Anyone have recent experience?

Kevin,

Price is pretty good for a new one w/optics & rings.  Buds want $255 for the same gun shipped w/o a scope plus you got your FFL on top.  Course Wallyworld has to collect the state's cut. If you look at the second letter of the serial it will give you the age up until May of 2008.  Then they started the "C" serials, so not sure after that.  "X" is 2007, "W" 2006, I have bought two new Handis this year which were made in these years w/o problems.  I haven't bought a SB2 frame yet with the "C" designation.

Kevin,

Supposed to be 1:9, but you have to check it.  FAQs provides the details on measuring the twist rate.

He last thing I saw in the FAQ's was that some were 1:9 and some 1:12.

I got a 223 ultra varmint from walmart about 5 years ago and it was $240.  I had to special order it.  they should have a book behind the counter for you to look through. Its been one heck of a great rifle for thinning out the groundhogs.  It likes the 45gr winchester white box ammo the best.  Ive shot 40gr hornadys through it also with great results.  not sure what my twist rate is but i think its 1 in 12".  Its a gardner made rifle if that helps.

Any .223 made after 2007 will be 1:9", even the Hornet is 1:9".

What kind of scope do you get with the package that you are looking at? the rings look really high on them.

CBA means the frame is an SB2 made May 2008 or later, barrel could be Gardner or Ilion, but I think Ilion is marking the last 4 digits on the underlug, frame will be marked Gardner or Ilion.

I got a new one with the new checkered synthetic stock, CBA serial number, 1 in 9 twist.  I mounted a scope, bore sighted it and put it on paper at 30 yards.  The weather turned to crap and I quit.  A couple of days later, a woodchuck showed up at about 225 yards off my porch.  I can't tell you why I grabbed the .223, but I did and drilled him.  A day later, pigeons showed up at pretty much the same place, and wham, exploded pigieon.......do I like my .223?  I haven't got a clue yet to how it is grouping, but it kills whatever I point it at.  Spring is short and very busy here, so I really haven't had the time to work with my rifles.  Quite a few need fine tuning.

Those shots were with just junk wolf, playing with the gun.  I'm thinking, when i can get the time to get serious on it, and reload for it, it's really be a tack driver.  My Handi .22-250 doesn't shoot worth anything, but I haven't worked on that much either.  See the FAQs, there's a lot of variables.

Anyhow, I love my .223.
