NEF/H&R questions?
« on: May 19, 2010, 09:22:14 PM »
This is my first post so far. I read more than I talk or ask questions, but I need to know. These rifles have definitely caught my interest and I can't find the info I am looking for.(I have used the search engine). If I buy a NEF in a certain caliber and want to change the caliber all I have to do is buy the barrel? Are they all interchangeable? How do I get started? I would like one in a 45/70 but also want to change to a 45 LC, how would I do that? Also can the same action and stock for a 45/70 be used on a .270? Please help, it seems I am lacking the basics on these firearms and need to be educated. Maybe I'm making it more complicated than needs to be :-\. All help and lessons would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time

Welcome,

There is a FAQs sticky post at the beginning of the H&R forum which can answer a lot of your questions.  Use control "F" to search for terms.  I will try and answer what I can of your questions.

You can have H&R fit accessory rifle barrels to a rifle (SB2) frame.  Depending on year of manufacture, there are SB2 frames that the factory will not fit barrels too.  Also, I believe the barrel acc. program is backed up a bit right now, would need to call H&R to verify this.

If you go to the www.hr1871.com and look at the their barrel accessory info. it will tell you what barrels are potentially available.

If you buy a used barrel to fit an existing rifle it may or may not fit to your frame. The FAQs provide details on fitting a barrel to a frame or a good gunsmith can do it.  It is very important to read all the safety precautions and warnings if you decide to fit a barrel yourself.  There can be real problems with an improperly fitted barrel.

One needs to know the difference between a shotgun (SB1) frame and rifle (SB2) frame as the pressure ratings are quite different.  In general centerfire barrels do not go on SB1 frames, with exception of a couple of pistol calibers.  FAQs will provide the info. to determine which frame you have.  This is important when buying used Handis because there are cases of people buying rifle barrels that have been fitted to shotgun frames.  Shooting this combination get be very hazardous.

Good luck & welcome again.  These are fun guns and there are lots of good folks at GBO that will be willing to help answer your questions.

I'm no expert by far. First NEF is likely to be a shotgun or SB1 frame. SB1/shotgun frames won't carry many of the cernterfire calibers. Also some NEF frames are too old to be factory fitted. There is where you start, with the frame you want. for 45 70 an SB2. Then can it be factory fitted and with what? eddiegjr

k= 1996 H&R will only fit the original chambering or 357mag and 44mag barrels to these frames since they were outsourced.

M=1998                     "
N=1999                      "
P=2000
R=2001
S=2002
T=2003
U=2004
V=2005
W=2006
X=2007
Y=2008 serial number prefixes changed in May 2008, CBA for SB2 and CAC for SB1
CB ? 2009

The first letter N = NEF, H = H&R, the second letter denotes year of manufacture.
You're looking for a P or later if you want to be able to order barrels marked with  * an asterisk on the accessory barrel page.

Ilion made barrels will have the last 4 digits of the frame serial number engraved on the left side of the barrel underlug, earlier barrels made in Gardner will have just the last three.

See the build year list in the FAQs as to what frames can be fitted with accessory barrels, '96-'99 SB2 frames can only be fitted with 357 and 44mag barrels as well as shotgun or ML barrels, same as SB1 frames, they won't fit any frames made prior to late 1986 that don't have a two letter serial number prefix starting with N or H.
