So my son comes up to me and says, "Dad could you show us something to do?"
"Sure…Glad too…let’s go."
So I take these kids and we cut some willow limbs, and I show them how to make a survival fishing pole. Then we go out to the local ditch and catch a whole passel of nice big Bullfrogs. They ahd never seen anything like this before, totally new to them. Once back home I show them how to dress them out and we cook them up for lunch. This also turned into an impromptu biology and physiology lesson.
After lunch I took them out into the backyard and we learned how to “make” fire using a magnifying glass, a bow and flint and steel…oh yeah, during lunch we made char clothe.
I had a blast and by the end of the day they were tired and excited.
That evening there was a knock on my front door. I opened the door and there stood this guy, maybe 200-250 pounds, heavy set and looking very stern.
He asks me, “You the guy that taught my kids how to start fires with out matches?”
I thought OMG, as a cold chill crept down my back…and the whole time all these horrible thoughts are creeping into my mind as to what have these kids done. I’m thinking that I'm in so much trouble. So I said, “Why yes I am.”
And he replies. “Could you show me how to do that?”
Next weekend we’re making self bows and going carp hunting.
