Survival and the Neighbors
« on: May 17, 2010, 09:00:49 AM »
So my son comes up to me and says, "Dad could you show us something to do?"

"Sure…Glad too…let’s go."

So I take these kids and we cut some willow limbs, and I show them how to make a survival fishing pole. Then we go out to the local ditch and catch a whole passel of nice big Bullfrogs. They ahd never seen anything like this before, totally new to them. Once back home I show them how to dress them out and we cook them up for lunch. This also turned into an impromptu biology and physiology lesson.

After lunch I took them out into the backyard and we learned how to “make” fire using a magnifying glass, a bow and flint and steel…oh yeah, during lunch we made char clothe.

I had a blast and by the end of the day they were tired and excited.

That evening there was a knock on my front door. I opened the door and there stood this guy, maybe 200-250 pounds, heavy set and looking very stern.

He asks me, “You the guy that taught my kids how to start fires with out matches?”

I thought OMG, as a cold chill crept down my back…and the whole time all these horrible thoughts are creeping into my mind as to what have these kids done. I’m thinking that I'm in so much trouble. So I said, “Why yes I am.”

And he replies. “Could you show me how to do that?”

Next weekend we’re making self bows and going carp hunting.

Reminds me getting into trouble when I was a very young lad by telling some of my friends( male and female) that "Pee" makes a good invisible ink. :D

We had some kin folks visit us a few years back they are pure city folk.
My son and I took the kids on a day hike. We showed them where to get good water from some springs.
We showed them how to catch fish by blocking off small pools in the creek and churning up the water to knock out the D.O. so the fish would float up. Then we built a fire using a flint and steel to cook the fish and roast some wild onions. The kids had a blast, but when we took them back to their parents the little one said we made them drink from ditches eat dirty fish and weeds and start a fire in the woods with a rock.
They ain't been back to see us since. ;D

Just in case you thoughtI was foolin' I wasn't, use urine to write on a piece of paper and it dries invisible. Expose it to a source of heat( don' burn it) you will be able to make out the words.

I usually wait a couple hours and expell the mountain dew using the conventional method. ???

When I was a kid at the ripe old age of 8 I was already making my own bows and arrows. I hadn't learned to nap flint yet so my broadheads were made from old tin can lids. I even carried a hunting knife on my belt and spent almost every waking moment, when not in school, running the woods thus armed. I'd hunt rabbits which I brought home to my grandmother for dinner. She raised me from birth. Well, one day as I was walking home down the dirt road carrying my bow, arrows, and rabbits, knife on my belt, a new shiny car came along and threw up a huge cloud of dust as the driver slammed on the brakes. It was a missionary new to the area. He got out and really read me the riot act. He took my bow and arrows and then my knife and made me get in the car and drove me home. There he proceeded to rant at my grandmother that I was much too young to be thus armed with such deadly weapons. lol Swore to her that I'd end up killing somebody! Well I'll admit the thought had entered my mind. Right about the time he took my gear and forced me into his car! lol Well, my old Granny just stood there taking it all in. Then she got the coldest look in her eye's I ever seen before or since. She told him flat out, " First, you give that boy back his belongings and you leave him alone from now on it's the Indian in him! He's Cherokee! Boy did I ever stand a bit taller and my chest puffed out a bit more when she cut loose! Further more, she told him, this is private property! You are on MY land and you have just seconds to leave before I go inside and get my scatter gun! You'd best not come back, ever! Know what? He never did either. lol My point is is that even at that age I could survive off the land and even help put food on the table. I'm mighty proud of that and believe every youngster should grow up like that. :) Every time someone has called me a bit wild since then I just remember Granny's words, " Leave the boy alone, it's the Indian in him, he's Cherokee!" Then you can't begin to wipe the smile off my face!
