I will look it up and ship it off. I used the .357 extractor, I ground some off the bottom at the rear so it could drop down, the rim cut dimension is the same as a 357 because there is no rim. I had to cut a little bevel on the inside top of the extractor so it would jump the rim if the cartridge was loaded over the rim, so if the barrel is closed the extractor will get pushed down and snap up into the rim cut. It worked out just fine, good thing too because all I have are ejector type ejectors. I did do a chamber cast to make sure the reamer cut a throat and it looks good to me, make sure the round doesn't get jammed into the lands when you test it, remember, you are the tester on this thing so be safe and tell us how it shoots. i sure am following this thing. i hope you let us know how it shoots. i am new to the handi world. just purchased a 25-06, havent shot it yet, waiting on nicer weather and some time.. there is a gun show in ft. wayne this weekend and i am interested to see how many handis i can find there. this is an amazing site. full of info. brian

I will get it fit to a frame, add the optics, and off to the range ASAP.

Tim, I plan on starting with factory,but will handload after that. You have any recommendations? I'm very curious to the velocity and barrel length. Ill be sure to chrony the factory loads as well.

I'd work with RL7 and the 180gr Hornady SSP, QuickLoad predicts 2378fps from the short barrel using 37.5gr and a COL of 2.545", load is just under 50kpsi.

Just a word of caution with hunting with this bullet at these velocities... Its a bullet designed for pistol caliber velocities from pistol barrels... Not rifle caliber in rifle length barrels at rifle velocities. It works well in the maxi in a rifle barrel but only achieves a little over 2000fps at the muzzle. My own loads are just over 2100 fps at the muzzle. They work well on the whitetails here in CT. BUT, a couple of the deer shot high in the shoulder only have shrapnel exit the off side. Mostly they dropped on the spot. So no complaining, but its obvious its at or near max velocity for game with the resistance of 150lb deer. On deer shot thru the lungs typical mushroom is predicted but never recovered a bullet. Exits where quarter sized and animals expired quickly and traveled a very short distance. Personally I prefer a animal drop where shot with a firearm. So I shoot for bones, this requires a bit tougher bullet. IMHO this SSP is on the cusp of being too soft where impact velocities exceed 2000fps.

I suggest you use the Speer 180gr for your 35Rem hunting loads. Hornady 200SP and 200 FT X are other great bullets for this caliber. I have shot dozens of the std 200's in a 358 and 35 Whelen and beautiful performance every time. I shot one deer at about 80-90 yards head on. I shot him just under the white patch of the throat. The bullet traversed the entire length of its body and exited one ham with a half dollar sized exit. The deer ran directly at me and ran right into a tree about 20 yards in front of me!! Dead on his feet. Another deer shot with this bullet was killed faster then any other I have ever seen... I shot it in the shoulder at about 50 yards. A quartering away shot. Upon impact the deer sucked his legs up to its body, hung in mid air for an instant and fell straight down on its brisket and just gently rolled over..... REAL bang flop!!!

Tip also touts the super 35 attributes, DEFINITELY stay away from the SSP for a game bullet at these higher velocities!!

Thanks Tim and CW. I figured I could load past 35rem pressure in the handi action. SSP I know is a lower velocity bullet,but thanks for the warning. Would probably be using hornady 200 gr sp. They really open up at 2200.

RL7 works great in the 38-55 with both loads I've shot, a lot of guys swear by it in the 45-70, the only powder I've used in the 35 Rem is Varget with two different cast bullets, 200gr and 240gr, both shot great.

Here's a terminal performance report on different bullets used in the 35 Rem including the 180gr SSP and 180gr Speer.

It's gone full circle and is done. The shortie maxi barrel arrived yesterday, and after a bit of shuffling found a nice frame to sit on. This whole episode could not have happened without Larry, trotterlg. He's the catalyst that put it together and made it work. Thank you Larry.
