OK, thinking about it. 60 yards with Leverlution ammo in a 45-70. That bullet is designed for big game, Deer and up. At the speeds the lever gun ammo develops, and a fairly sturdy bullet, I can see it passing completely through a Coyote, if no bones were hit, without expanding. A complete pass through, big hole in and big hole out, taking skin, meat, and other matterial with it. Yet no vital organs hit, and not enough damage to stop Coyote in it's tracks. Hard to fatham with a 45-70, but I can see it happening. Seriously doubt Coyote surviving, but no telling how far it ran, or where the hole is it crawled into before dying.
That's a problem we have. What works for big game does not work for smaller game. A stopping bullet I use for Coyotes, only put a hole the size of a soft ball in the neck of a Caribou. Caribou ran off. It's hard to go out set up for everything we might encounter.
