I think I need a bigger Handi!!!
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:51:42 PM »
I shot a coyote this morning at about 60 yards with my 45-70 knocked him over and he ran off.  I found chunks of meat all over the place but no Yote.

I whacked one in the front shoulder with a 223 55grfmj ended up tracking it almost 2 miles before it got to dark never did find it. They can be pretty tough critters

Coyotes are rediculously tough animals.  I shot one at 50 yds with my 500 S&W rifle mid body shot.  He fell down, then got up and took off.  Followed a blood trail 75 yds, then we gave up as we didn't want to trample the woods.  Unbelievable in my mind.

Oh, I was using a Hornady 300 gr leverevolution bullet at about 2300fps.

I was shooting the Hornady lever-evolution round.  Its sighted in 3" high at 100.  I aimed a couple of inches low and still hit high on him.  Thats the first thing I have shot with this gun.  I really expected the bang flop reaction.

I shot one with a 7mm Rem. Mag. one time and upon inspection, there was a nice cone shaped blood spray in the snow, and the coyote ran off without any appearance of being hit.

OK, thinking about it.  60 yards with Leverlution ammo in a 45-70.  That bullet is designed for big game, Deer and up.  At the speeds the lever gun ammo develops, and a fairly sturdy bullet, I can see it passing completely through a Coyote, if no bones were hit, without expanding.  A complete pass through, big hole in and big hole out, taking skin, meat, and other matterial with it.  Yet no vital organs hit, and not enough damage to stop Coyote in it's tracks.  Hard to fatham with a 45-70, but I can see it happening.  Seriously doubt Coyote surviving, but no telling how far it ran, or where the hole is it crawled into before dying.

That's a problem we have.  What works for big game does not work for smaller game.  A stopping bullet I use for Coyotes, only put a hole the size of a soft ball in the neck of a Caribou.  Caribou ran off.  It's hard to go out set up for everything we might encounter.

Sourdough,

That was my thoughts as well.  This bullet is designed to expand in a larger thicker skinned animal than a coyote.  I shot a bob cat with a 30-30 one time and it did the same thing.  I posted this mostly in joking matter.  I'm sure the coyote is dead and I didn't have to drag him away from my plot.  So it's two wins!

Not trying to be critical but "mid body" on a coyote or most anything else.
their is nothing there to cause sudden death, no lungs or bones. bullet
goes through and causes little damage, put that same bullet in the shoulder and see what happens.

I'm sure that what happened with the one i shot with the 223 fmj was that it went in and out note enough internal damage. I had read an article in preditor extreme magazine about fmj vs hp and how fmj cause less pelt damage. Well after my experience I no longer use fmj for coyotes i would rather have a dead coyote than a less damaged pelt.

I use a smaller Handi (30-06) for my 'yotes.   Last one I got received a 180g Fusion enema at 186 yds.   He stopped because the Front half and back half of him became separated.

I have taken bobcat with a single shot of a 20gr 17HMR in the neck.   DRT.

I have followed hog and deer "quite a fer piece" when they were shot a little too far back to connect with the vitals.

Last year I hit a large doe quartering toward me at 90 yds with the 300 gr 4570.   it hit behind the near shoulder and out the gut on the far side.    She ran with blood coming out nicely.  tracked her for about 300 yds where she went into a swamp.   Two days later we found the carcass about 250 yds further on the far side of the swamp.    It wasn't the bullet ..  it was my poor placement not allowing for the quartering angle.   Learned something.

I put a 50 cal. 385 gr. slug through one end to end.  Blew intestines out the backside.  She didn't run off.  I was wanting a pelt however, and this was not usable.............. ???

shot a couple of hogs with 303 Mk VII fmj rounds - these are designed to tumble on impact - small hole going in, 1 1/2" hole going out and jellying the insides.   Only fmj I have seen do this.    I would use it on 'yotes if the enfield wasn't so darn heavy to carry.
