I have to back up the rest of the guys here.  I have 3 of the 357's and before reaming all 3 to the Max, my 15 year old boy and I each took turkeys with neck shots with em.  I can assure you that won't get done with a 5-6" group.  DP
RIP Oct 27, 2017

I wonder what shortening it to 16.1" will do to the accuracy?

Why put a can on a single? already have it and want another use for it?
I think the Handi makes a nicer suppressor host than many others out there. Single shot and all. Locks up well enough that you don't get crap spitting back into your face. Also makes it much quieter. I know many a bolt or lever action will do the same, but for me a suppressed Handi is just pretty darn cool. Plus, especially in .357, it is a much less expensive option than most others.
Have lights? Thank a Lineman!

The 9mm can also fits my AR-15 9mm I just registered as a SBR. However.. with the 9mm bullet weights are not great and the AR is louder as there is a lot of action noise with the semi. The Handi is wicked quiet when suppressed, no action noise! I enjoy hunting nutria here in Oregon and that is often times on the edge of town and during evening hours. The silencerresearch test shows a video of the test with the handi.... got it to 122 dB which is really quiet! the 180-200 grain pistol bullet at 1050 fps seems like it would be a good close in nutria and black tail round. Plus I like shooting with the kids lots and they enjoy it more suppressed (both girls in single digit ages).

The 50mm objective is not going to live on the handi... too big for my liking too. Just to test the loads. A compact red dot is in the future to be mated for the low light application.

I think the 16.1 barrel will be ok - as the pistol round should certainly stabilize after 16" of travel AND all the powder will have burned in the barrel (and not in the suppressor) I do worry a tad about the twist rate and heavy bullet but shooting will tell that story. I am rather excited to actually get the shooting done.  the barrel is pretty stout, I think shortening will make it even stiffer.

This is a pic of what I am envisioning:

122db is above the threshold of hearing damage, a 22Lr report is 134dB for comparison, just a heads up for the unknowing.  ;)

True 122 is above - but I have a .22 can on a rifle that is about that and incredibly pleasant. Like an air rifle.

Just a little factor in the .22 at 134 and suppressed handi at 122... its logrithmic and 134 has more than 10x more noise energy than 122.

I'm no physicist or anything but... 122 is pretty darn nice.

Any report over 85-90dB causes hearing loss, one shot at a time, the notion that shooting a suppressed firearm doesn't cause hearing loss is ignorant.  ::)

Yeah I do, but the wife never let's me forget, specially when my wrist watch alarm goes off (that I can't hear anymore! :'() and she yells at me from the other room to let me know about it!!  :o I had to buy a watch that has a vibrating alarm. Same with turn signals, can't hear it clicking either, even the extra loud ones.  :-X

That thresh hold is probably accurate for sustained sound exposure.

The OSHA approved thresh hold for impulse sound is 140db.  A gun shot is an impulse sound.  Although constant exposure to 139db impulse sound will damage your hearing eventually.  But on the other hand exposure to any sound will eventually damage your hearing like chain saws, lawn mowers, loud vehicles, screaming wives or children, etc... It is all cumulative.

I wear SportEars when hunting for a few hours a day which work fine, but they aren't comfortable for full time wear, wife has  been after me to get hearing aides for years, but I  solved the TV problem with headphones too which was a big gripe for her, tried a $70 wireless set, but got too much static, so went with a wired set that works great.....it also makes a great excuse for not hearing her!!! :o 8) ;D

The problems I've dealt with are the reasons I'm so adamant about using hearing protection and educating those that still have good hearing before it's too late.  ;) I remember sticking cigarette filters in my ears when I was a kid at shooting ranges with my Dad cuz the noise hurt, he wasn't aware of the damage being caused and never taught me any different. :-\

I have one of the 357 Handi Rifles. It's accuracy depends on what you consider to be accurate. From talking to others, mine seems typical. Around 5-7" from a bench at 100 yds no matter what load I put through it. I have a Williams Reciever sight on it.

----------------------------------------------------

so this guy was shoot'n open sites at 100yrds ??

he did'nt mention anything about wind speed

or ammo.... prolly cheap factory stuff  ::)

too many possible varibles to be condeming--- "typical"----come-on !!!! :D

i can't expect finding the right handload in just one trip to the paper
unless you got a covered trailer with your load'n stuff and all types of powder and bullets.

100yrds with irons !!!!!   5-7" groups....no matter what load !!!! ::)

sounds like the handi was doing its job !!!

put some glass on that thang man......... ;D
and read the FAQ's

i'm done now  :'(

All three of mine will shoot inside of two inch at 100yards with iron sights, scopes are not required to shoot well, But they sure don't hurt.

I'm considered hearing disabled, and I've worn various kinds of hearing aids for many years now. Believe me when I say that anything over about 85 DB is a bad thing. Impulse threshold doesn't hold water if you are exposed to it more than about once a week.. :D Tim, you should get hearing aids, they would make your life, and the life of those around you more pleasant. They are uncomfortable at first but stay with them, and they become part of your normal routine. One of the side benefits with many of the new ones now is that they can be programmed to shut down when exposed to noise like a gunshot.

Finally getting a chance to sit at the bench with the Handi tomorrow.

I have the following loads I will chrono and shoot:

.38:

Federal Hydrashock +p+ 147
Blazer LRN 124
WW 148 WC Super Match
Reload 158 XTP
Winchester 110 HP Silvertip

.357

Reload 158 XTP
Reload 158 SWC
Federal 125 Personal Defense Ammo
Winchester 110 JHP
Remington 158 SJHP

Mildly concerned the trigger pull in the vise with my Lyman registered an average of 6# 10 oz after 12 pull tests throwing out the high and low. .... :(

Mounted up a decent Burris 4.5-14x 50mm.... should be able to see a 50 yard target.

If it shoots good it will wear the Sightron S33 and the barrel will be hacked and threaded at 16.1.

Groups to follow.

you may not hack  i once you see how quiet  those  38s are

i  have  a chopped and  suppressed  one
don't use it any more
he  22in  barrel  is so quiet  and  more ''handi''  with out the can
plus the added power with the longer barrel

There's a new one arriving today.  The .357 mag is going down State to be cut to 16.5 inches, recrowned and reamed to Max.  When it comes back, it'll wear the red dot and a synthetic youth stock and live in my pick-up.

That sounds like a slick little truck gun!  ;D

;) I finally go to the range. Windless day, 53 degrees, overcast, 300 feet elevation.

I shot the following ammo with the following velocities and corresponding groups at 50 yards, 22" barrel at 10x with the 6 # 10 oz trigger!

Conclusions follow the data:

.38 blazer 124 lrn 938 fps 4"+
.38 Winchester 110 silvertip 1193fps 4"+
.38 Winchester match target 148 WC 845fps 2"
.38 XTP reload 993fps 3.25"
.38 Fed Hydrashock 147  1167 fps .75"
.357 158 SWC reload 1282 fps 1.375"
.357 Fed 125 personal defense 1985 .75"
.357 158 xtp reload 1999 fps .75"
.357 Remington SJHP 1706 fps .625"
.357 Winchester 110 JHP 1719 fps 2" - Actually it shot two different 1" groups in different places, it was last, I was getting tired and losing light and rushed the shooting. I think the Handi heated up.

a photo of my personal favorite group:

I took 10 rounds of each to the range and chroned only 3 of them, then shot 2 sighters and a group of five. If I jerked and knew it the group is the best of 4.

I used the bag under the sling swivel in the rear and on the frame in front, leaving the forend alone.

Rate of fire was about 1 round per 90 seconds. Between each different load I cleaned the bore, fired a pair of sighting/fouling rounds on a shilloutte, and then set to groups.

At first, when shooting the .38s, I was like  - OHHHHHH  NO this is an 8 MOA gun...all my fears were coming true.

But it got much better. I recalled the post about if you shoot them more they do better. I think that came to play here. At the end of the session I had a mixed bag of 40 misc rounds I fired as fast as possible, then cleaned the gun.

I did fire a subsonic .38 without hearing protection... not bad, it is erilly quiet. I cant wait to not hear it with a supressor.

I learned a few things, most notable the rifle can shoot with the right ammo. I know I have a decent piece of steel in the barrel and can continue on with my project. A trigger job will HAVE to be in the works tho.

Now I get to take that ill matched scope off, get the barrel chopped, turned, red dot mounted, and do it again!

Don't clean it so much and your groups might improve, I have about 350 or 400 rounds thru mine with out cleaning the barrel and it shoots great. 8)
