handi won't cock
« on: January 13, 2010, 03:35:43 AM »
I've seen this post before, but couldn't seem to find it with the forum search. Anyway with the help from Quick I was able to get the 45/70 barrel fitted to my frame. Now it wont cock. Tried backing off the stock screw, nothing. Any ideas? The barrel latches nicely with what seems to be the right amount of play in the release. I gave my original barrel back to the gunsmith to get a dovetail for a front sight cut, so I can't try that one on for a test.

Try cocking the frame without a barrel on it and see what you get.  If it won't cock witht he barrel on it and does with no barrel, most likely the release lever isn't coming up high enough.  Larry

Barrel on or off still won't cock. Was working fine before I took it to gunsmith to try to fit barrel. Took him 3 mounths to tell me it wasn't gung to work. Then with help from the board it took almost 5 minutes to get it fitted and closing. Now this cocking issue has popped up. Looks like I may need to push out some pins and see if its gotten some fillings or crud hung up somewhere. So I guess it's not like the Encores and Contenders that need to have a barrel latched up to cock.

If you haven't already, download Perklo's trigger hone instructions and make sure the hammer and trigger parts are all there and installed correctly.  ;) I'd double check the stock bolt, remove it completely and make sure it's not the problem first, if the bolt is too long, even backing it out a little may not be enough.

The stock bolt was the trick. I'll shim it with a drilled out 3/8 bolt or cut off the bolt if i have enough threads. Thanks Quick

Metric washers or just buy a 4" long 3/8"-24 cap screw.

Quick:

I've checked both Home Depot and Lowes - neither carries the 3/8x24 bolt.   Where's a good place to find one?

Thanks.

Could have picked up the washers while at the hardware and be through with it. 5 washers will cost less than 1 bolt. And Quick said it will work! (PS:I usually do things the hard way also.) eddie

Around here Ace, the local Farmers Co-op, or the really local place called Handyman Hardware has it. Handyman has kept in business because they carry MANY things that Lowes and Home Depot do not. You may have somewhere traditional like that where you are from.

NAPA Auto Parts usually has a good selection of very good quality bolts. Also check your yellow pages for Fastenal. They have everything and way cheaper than stores.

Quick is, once again, da bomb!

Dropped by my Ace Hardware and, after going up and down the isle several times, there they were!   $1.50 later and I was out the door.

Thanks for the heads-up.
