My version of stock alteration.
« on: December 11, 2009, 12:01:44 PM »
Hi guys.  Well I didn't like the way the pallet wood pistol grip stock fit in my hand.  So I converted it to an english stock.  I added some inlay work to it to jazz it up which is crushed blue lapis and buffalo horn.  I stained it cherry to bring out a little bit of fiddleback that was already there.  I like it much better now.  It really makes the rifle look nice.  Here is a before and after pic.  What do you all think?

Thanks Tim!   Here is another pic showing the grain, which is sometimes hiding beneath all that factory red.   ;D

Your sure did a great job on that stock. It amazes me how many very talented people are  to be found here.

I always strip and refinish my Handi stocks. Most of them have turned out to be really nice looking under all that nasty stain. I like to finish mine with a BLO scrub with 0000 steel wool. Makes for a very nice finish. I thin the BLO 50/50 with mineral spirits. ;)

Thanks for the comments guys.  I was going to make it more fancy but didn't want it to look gaudy  ;)  Next time I'll use some ivory inlays.

Spanky, what do you use to strip off the factory finish?

I use a citrus stripper that I get a Wal Mart.
Takes it right off. I have used Strip X before but it's pretty harsh stuff.

+1 on the Citri-strip. Pretty mild stuff, but does a great job stripping the finish. Once stripped I give it a paint thinner wash down and let it dry before refinishing.
