I love the 170 grain Core-Lokt.

Deer do not require a premium bullet.  If fact I think they are inferior to the Core-Lokt.

Amen to that.  The 30-30 as used on whitetails has been around, building its own good reputation, for a lot longer than exotic ammo and premium bullets have been marketed for that caliber. It appears to me that this has been the case in most parts of the country where whitetail deer are hunted, too.

I'm not sure there's much diff between Fed & Rem 170s, 'partitions' excepted. I've never used a 'partition' but, but I've killed deer with Fed/Rem/Win 150s and 170s (never a Winchester 170, yet). All seem to work pretty good. Winchester PowerPoints, on the two deer I shot with them, seemed to make big entrance.

This year is mostly a Federal Powershok 150 year - they're the cheapest thing at the store, they group well in my rifle, and they work on deer. I figure they prob open up a little harder than 170s, going faster (and they kick a little less, too, though all 30-30s are mild). Yesterday I took my nicest deer ever, with the Federal 150. About 140 yards, swampy area, 9am. Deer ran about 30 yards. I'm sore from the 2 hour drag, but jazzed at getting the deer.

And I'm ever more convinced that plain old non-premium ammo works fine, whether Win or Rem or Fed and prob a few others I haven't tried!

Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

It looks like a mere flesh wound.  Don't you know you need a .300 ultra mag to kill a deer.  ;D .... Congrats on the deer!!!!!

Nice deer and great shooting.  I have four boxes of 150-grain Powershok loads setting in the ammo chest from a buy on sale a couple years ago.  Have to admit that when it was time to hunt two years ago I default to the 150-grain Remington C-L because I had no evidence on the effectness of the Powershok.  After seeing your post I fell better about having them in my rifle.

i thought np bullets were designed for high speed cartridges where regular cup/core bullets would not stand up.

I bought my first Federal Premium years ago in the weeks after deer hunting here when the big box stores put them on a good sale.  I have quite a good stash at this point and know they do a great job on deer.  I don't know if it is any better than any other, but I do know they shoot better (sub inch groups at 100 yards out of my 30AW), so I stick with them.

I understand that Federal specs the Nosler bullets to perform well out of lever guns.  They do a good job of killing deer.

Keith L,
Well I guess I will have to wait until next season to shoot my Federal Premiums as my mother had a accident where she broke her bone just below her hip bone and surgery was required and I went down to Louisiana to help her through her surgery and other medical issues. So my hunting was halted for this year!
I also use the 30 AW!

I hope things go well with your mother and with your 30AW.

Have any of you had experience in using the Federal 170 grain( Nosler Partion) as opposed to the 170 grain Rem Corelokt?
I had purchased a few boxes of the Federals a couple of years ago and and sighted in my Model 336 with these Federals. I plan on using the 30-30 on whitetails this month and since the rifle is already
sighted in with the Federals I was planning on using them for the whiteails. Normally in my other caliber guns I normally use the Rem corelokt`s. So was just wandering if anyone has used these Federals on whitetails and welcome any comments you might have.
I have always had great luck with the 170 Grain Core-lokts. I have not tried anything else in my 30-30 cause the Core-lokts just simply work. If it ain't broke don't fix it is the way I feel.

We always liked the 170gr. CoreLokts.  Never had any need to try anything else.

ive use corelocks many a times on deer and federals a couple. Both work fine. Im sure the nos part. work great too but personaly im not about to waste my money on premium bullets for something as easy to kill as a deer. If i was taking the 3030 out after elk or moose or a bear that weighted over 400 lbs then i might consider them. But in all actuallity the 3030 has taken care of all of these animals with standard bullets too.

Now there is your problem you have a huge hole in the fuel pump and that is why your deer is down.   ;D

I use Rem CL on everything but elk. For elk its a Fed Premium load. I have nothing against the Fed 30-30s, but my years of using heavy for caliber Rem CL's is now a habit. My Marlin shoots great groups with the Rem CL 170's, so if it aint broke I won't fix it.
