Its is here too!!  ;D
The bucks where EVERYWHERE!!!  My buddie saw a REALLY good 10pt. Bone white horns and way tall. He got a shot. the deer was walking at about 80yards.... He proceeded to blast the center a 4" ironwood tree....LOL  Another guy in our group saw a nice big 6, no brow tines, but had no shot. I also saw a coyote right at dark.

CW, it looks like the little lady might be excellent on the table ;)  Horns don't really impress me, but good venison does.  I just love it when an old round keeps proving itself.  There are probably more deer killed with the .30-30 than by God, lightning, aborigines and sabre tooth tigers.  I guess that's one of the reasons I like my .45-70 so well.

That's nice and all, but I need to mention 2 truths:

1. The 30-30 is an antiquated, underpowered round   and
2. Handi-rifles are simple, cheap, single-shots that can't compete with $2000+ rifles.

Think about that as you're eatin' steaks.

Thanks guys!!

The shot on the doe was close, bow range 20 yards. I was watching her for about 20 Min's. I wasn't going to shoot but she pegged me and I said what the hell. One in the hand you know...

Later in the afternoon, the Buck jumped up out of his bed and ran out about 60-70 yards and turned broad side.. nite nite.  ::) ;D

I live just about dead center of the state. Both of these came off a coveted parcel close to my home.  ;)  I also hunt allot up in the corners, both northwest and northeast. I like both, But the western corner is more mountains.

Off to work now.....

   Jeepers;
He didn't need a .378 blazing Elephant thumper to kill it, nor 7 rounds to back it up! The handi keeps it on a sporting level..good going CW.

I killed 2 deer (Doe and a Spike, but I shot him for a doe) with my 45-70 short rifle on Oct 16.  I tell every one I am on the cutting edge of technology.  I use a round that has been with us since about 1866, in a rifle design from the 1870's.  I shoot cast lead bullets (mostly) but I do embrace the modern technology of smokeless powder.  I figure it's like me-just because its old, doesn't mean it cant get the job done!  My second favorite handi is the 30-30 though.  It is my longe range rifle.

Good shootin'!

Those deer obviously didn't get the memo that the 30-30 is obsolete and that every deer hunter needs the new super-duper, uber-tacticool short magnum in order to kill a deer.

Nice deer CW and congratulations.

Are you going to give that .357 Maxi some exercise?

I've got three in the freezer so far myself, one with the bow last month, an eight pt. with my 20 ga. Tracker ll, and a 9 pt. with the .270 Handi the other day, and my .357 Maxi is going to take the next one, or will it be the 45-70?

Decisions, decisions!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Great job CW!    I hear that venison is a heart healthy protein.    Enjoy!  I hope to do as well over Thanksgiving weekend with my 45-70.

The 454 gets the go next. I had the 32-20 set to go yesterday and at the last min decided against it. We have been seeing a 200lb 10pt for a couple weeks and my stand was close to one of his known bedding areas... Turns out I should have taken the 32-20 as that doe would have been perfect. Now I still have one antlerless permit, but wanna focus on horns for the next couple trips. SO, the 454 gets the nod for that.. its still a virgin!!  ;D  Saturday is the next trip, with Sunday reserved for butchering duties....

I hear ya with the 454!

I took the .270 the last trip because I've got some 300+ yard possible shots, and that big 9 walks out at 60 yards!

That's my big buck for the place because I can take two bucks there, so the other will now have to be a spike because of the rules in that county, and my other place, in a different county, I still can kill another buck, but it's going to have to be with my 20 gauge because it's shotgun only (landowners rule).

I took a buck there already at 35 yards, and that 1 oz. Remington Buckhammer destroyed one shoulder.

I'm good out to 100 on paper, but I doubt I'd shoot over 75 but the deer is going to determine that one.

Good luck CW and get a big one!

How did the FTX bullets perform with your max loads, did you get exit holes on both deer? I've been thinking of trying them in my 30-30AI.
Thanks!
