When I am big game hunting with a rifle, if I am stalking, I carry a .22 handgun to shoot rabbits or squirrels for the pot.  If I do shoot one, I get it and remain still for about 30 minutes.

Good Lord, if they caught me in the woods of CT with a handgun, it would not be a good thing.  Even with a permit to carry a handgun, state parks and forests are no-go and any handgun hunting is no-go even on private land.  That said, a 22 pistol makes good sense; just good sense and the law aren't hunting buddies around here ;).

You can carry openly in the woods in Alabama.  You have to have a CC permit to carry it otherwise.  If I am hunting with a shotgun, I carry a .44 mag as sidearm.  If hunting with a deer rifle during deer season, I carry a .22.  Squirrel, rabbit, quail, small game, overlap into deer season.

I meant no disrespect in my post, I just see no reason to use a 45cal on small game unless it need be a necessity not to mention cost... 45-70 to 22lr ?
Again to each his own, if you feel the need to experiment with this it's a free country ;D

Ya. I cant believe this came into question.  ??? kinda funny actualy.
you could ask gallagar if you could barrow his mallot... same results ;D
let us know how it turns out.
I personaly wouldn't take anything smaller than a hog or goat with a 45-70 unless its the only gun you have.
anyway, thanks for the laugh.

As has been repeatedly pointed out a round ball or CB fired subsonic in 45-70 makes a quite functional rabbit load. All my shots have been direct to the rib cage and damage has been no greater than six shot with a 12 gauge. In fact I actually now consider a shotgun a bad choice, but my deer and rabbit season (as well as bear) overlap. If you're suggesting I take a second gun out with me on a twenty plus mile hike through the National Forest instead of carrying other loads for my 45-70 I thank you for the laugh.....
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

I always say the 45-70 is good for "bunnies to bears" and everything in between. :D
No reason not to use it on small game. Just pick your shots.
