405 Winchester
« on: November 06, 2009, 05:03:17 AM »
Does any one have a single shot in this caliber? I have a T/C contender with a SSK barrel topped with a luepold scope. That's a 38 special next to the 405

I had inquired as to whether J.D. would chamber a Contender in the .405, he said it was safe, but not very popular..I bet the recoil is very stout! to say the least..what's your impression of the round in a Contender?

Well  It has been magna ported but it does not seem to help.  You can't put both hands on the grip and shoot, I heard my wrist pop :o. I can't seem to get the thing sighted in???  I talked to JD and he said it was the scope, talked to Luepold and they said it couldn't be the scope. I don't know what the problem is??? It will bruise the palm of my hand if i shoot it more than 10 times in a row.  I don't know if i need to send it out and have a different muzzle brake installed?

Place a target at 10 yards and shoot a 5-shot group.  How big is the group?  If it is over 3/4" center-to-center of the widest holes then either the recoil is too rough for you, or the scope/mount is bad.  Have another experienced handguner shoot it and see what results he gets.  You do not shoot a handgun like this with two hands on the grip.  Place the off hand on the forend to hold up the beast.  A set of PAST gloves helps tame the recoil a bit.  Mag-Na-Porting mainly re-directs the recoil back and reduces muzzle rise, not total recoil.

Try down-loading the cartridge to a 3/4 level load and see if it gets better.  SSK barrels are seldom not highly accurate, and Leupold scopes are seldom defective.  While it certainly could be either, I'd check the shooter first.

I was considering a 20" bull barrrel, thought it would be a great hog round if I ever got to go pig hunting..I had cringed at the thought for shooting it in rifle form, really can't imagine the round in a pistol!!

I have a encore pistol that has a 450 GNR 15 1/2 barrel with a muzzle brake. It was using 405 brass but is now using 50 caliber Alaskian brass, and is necked down to a .458. I use Barnes bullets. I use the 350 grain bullets the most, but I can shoot 500 grain bullets in it. I shoot it with two hands. It is manageable, but it is a real handful. It kicks more than any other pistol I have even shot. I use a scope and shoot 1" groups. At the very beginning I was shooting larger groups, which I think was due to fact I was flinching in anticipating the big kick I was going to receive after I pulled the trigger. After time, I got use to the big kick, and I shot better groups. My 50 caliber S/W pistol is a wimp in kick compared to the 450 GNR kick

I shot one in the Encore Rifle configuration for a while. What a cannon. I would rather have it in a pistol now that I had the rifle.
I have been doing some research on the 405 in the Encore by MGM and a Holland break. I just don't know what length of barrel I want yet. Probably around 15 or 16". I really like the 405 and it is easy to reload.
I don't think I would trust it in a Contender.
