2009 Deer Huntin
« on: September 26, 2009, 10:33:24 AM »
Every year I have the dilemma of which Handi to hunt with, was gonna hunt with the 35 Whelen Improved since I like the new style syn stock on it, but I haven't been to the range yet to work up a load and time is drawing near, soooo, since I need to shoot the 25ACP adapter  with other ammo to see if it works any better, and needing a frame to put the new style syn stock set I bought from Gendoc, since the 25-06 Ultra already has factory loads that shoot excellent which I already have, it was a no brainer to put the stock set on it, all I have to do is check the zero on one of my next couple of fishing trips near our hunting area, I can shoot some more of the 25ACP ammo at the same time!! Some of the clear cuts I hunt are plenty big enough to test my shooting ability, shots well over 300yds could be possible, so I'll be carrying it this year, here's a pic of the 26" barreled Ultra in the new stock set.

I also figured out another use for the mini-mill, I found that the diameter of the rear of the forend is just over 1", about 1.1", the diameter of a course Vermont American 1" drum sanding sleeve just fits the contour of the forend, so it didn't take me long to lay the forend in the vice on the mill and line the drum sander up and turned on the power and removed just a smidge from the face of the forend so the forend just barely stays on the barrel without the screw, just the way I like it, this could also be done on a drill press, although not as easy on the old style forend which doesn't have the straight sides and flat bottom that make the new style easy to set up, but it could be done with some effort to insure it was mounted in the vice plumb to the sanding drum.  ;D

I sat at my table this morning in front of my sliding glass door and was wiping down my Handi 45-70.
Out in my "close to the cabin" garden, about 45 yards, were 4 doe eating my busted up pumpkins. Nice and plump they are. Behind them were 12 hen turkeys. Now I don't think the good lord would be upset if I got something to eat, do you?
No, I won't use the 45-70 on the turkeys, my pardner 12 ga will work just fine.  Can't wait !!  :)

This will be my first chance to use my 22" syn. stock,45-70. Wife got it for me for christmas last year. To late for deer season so this will be the virgin hunt with my Handi.

Huntsman all the way from Oct 1 thru 11, then 45-70 or 500 S&W til a few more leaves get off of the trees.  Then out comes the 25-06 or 280 when I get able to see more than 50 yds thru the brush.  Can't wait to get started.

Tim, I like those new stocks. Hope she shoots good for you. What do you use the 25acp for and what velocity can you get?

Hey Hermit, What state is Knob Gobblers in? Sounds like you have some good game going on there.

About 760fps, I'd shoot a grouse with it if it was close enough.  ;)

Yeah, tell me bout it, I have so many unbloodied Handis that I'll never take a deer with even a few of them having only one deer tag per year and a slim chance at getting a deer with it, haven't killed a deer since 2003, passed on a button buck in 2004, wished I hadn't by the end of the season.  :-\

Tim, Ya need to get on a plane and be here by November 13.  I'll get you your deer. ;)

The .45-70, .445 SM, and the .357 Max are going this year.  I have a secure mini-cabin out back, so I'll leave two on the rack there and carry one depending on conditions at the time.

Yup, just one over the counter tag, there are permits that can be drawn for more in a few locations on the east side, again several hours drive away.

I only got 5 deer tags this year and got one son 5 also.  Oldest boy didn't get in to get extra "B" (doe/fawn) tags and second oldest hasn't gotten off his duff to take hunters education again this year, so he's not hunting.  They cut back this year and if you didn't get in to purchase tags for the area you wanted the first day, they were sold out.  Hope everyone has a good season this year, ours starts Oct 25-Nov 29 for general rifle season for deer and elk.  I think one of the 357 Max's will have to go out for one doe.  DP

New 30-30 or new 308 is my dilemma although I think the kid has laid claim to the 30-30. four tags each here in N.Y. Buck tag, bow/ml either sex and two doe tags for a total of eight between me and the boy.Wish momma would take her hunter safety course. She says she will when we fill all our tags in one season.

I think I need about 75 deer permits so I can use a different rifle and pistol to take each one.........hahaha...............I find I usually take a different one each day untill I get my deer, then I wish I'd used a different one........If i take my 270 or 300 WSM, I shoot a deer at 40 yards, and if I have my pistol or 45-70 Handi, I see a deer at 300 plus yards...........oh well, the joys of hunting and owning a bunch of different guns......

Looks like if I'm doing any doe drives I'll have  the 357max.  ANY stand hunting will go to the 25-06 or a 243 SL that I have a reduced youth load I'd like to try.
Good luck to you ALL!

Gents,

I'll use my just finished 44 mag this year for deer and hogs.  Intended to use it for primitive weapons season this year, but derned if my daughter didn't pick that weekend to get married.  I'll use it for the rest of the regular season, along with my 20 guage for squirrel and rabbit.

Got to shoot the 25-06 again last Thursday, just found the targets, thought they got disposed of, but I found em mixed in with my unshot targets, musta put it there when packing up.  ::) The first range trip didn't work out real well, the 25-06 Ultra doesn't seem to like the synthetic stock set and I didn't want to make another trip to test tweaking it, so I put the lams back on it, and tried again, this time it shot excellent as it always did, but this time I tried some factory 120gr Rem ammo that I got from Mac since I used up a good share of the good shooting stuff, it shoots excellent also, we were shooting at 131 lazered yards, the biggest problem was making scope adjustments, over correcting is real easy when trying to make žmoa adjustments at 131yds instead of 100yds!! :-\ Shots 1 and 2 were made with adjustments between them, then one more adjustment and allowed the rifle to sit a bit to cool, then  3 and 4 were shot back to back, I'm happy!  ;D

Got some good news today.  I got a doe management tag.  That gives me a buck or doe archery, a buck rifle or muzzleloader, and two more does any season.  There'll be venison this year. ;)  It's time to get what remains of last year's out of the freezer and jerk it. ;D
My goal this year is to take a deer with each of the Handis in .445 Super Magnum and .357 Maximum.  They'll be accompanied by my .357 Blackhawk.  My .50 Huntsman and .50 Kentucky pistol will be working during the ML season.
