Any Handiholics live near or know of Kearney, Nebraska?
« on: August 31, 2009, 06:50:21 PM »
Researching a job in Kearney, NE, and was wondering if any Handiholics have info or an opinion? Hunting, shooting ranges, decent folks? That last one is almost a given in the Midwest in my experience.

Yes, I am looking for small town life again and have been given permission by my ex to move away from KC metro if it means a good job and I will be able to afford my child support rather than be unemployed.

Thanks.

P.S. I would not have the guts to post this in other forums, for some reason the H&R/NEF GBO forum everyone treats you like a good friend, a decent neighbor, and family. Other Non-GBO forums do not have that warm fuzzy feeling.

My folks lived in Phillipsburg Ks for a while. That whole area is plum full of decent people. We always new when we were close, because people would start waving. I mean every car would wave as they past you. Your arm would be tired by the time you got into town. To meet them was the same.

Not sure exactly how far Kearney was from there. But they have a small rail road depot in Phillipsburg. Kyle Rail road I believe. You may check with them. I know after I moved back here to Indiana, I got an invite to go to back out there for a job. I was stupid and didnt go. Its a small Locomotive rebuild shop. They custom build and lease trains. Super nice people. My father worked out there until his health made him retire.

If you stay out that direction, Check into the Phillipsburg Rodeo. It is a major event. Not just a few folks riding bareback.

Good luck I think you will like the area.

My wife's people, the Ponca Tribe are at Niobrara, NE.  I've never been out there....yet...soon I hope.  She's the nicest person I know ;) :D ;) :D ;D  It's been my experience that almost anywhere in this country outside the cities there's a lots of nice folks.  I'm not saying there aren't any in the cities......you just never know them.....even if they live next door.

Kearney is a nice small city. I used to travel there on business about 10 times a year. Don't know a great deal about hunting around Kearney, except mostly done on the Platte River that runs right outside of town. They get a lot of waterfowl traffic. There's a Cabelas retail&warehouse on the east edge of town, they would have more info for you and they have good tent sales.:) The best part is you will be a Nebraska resident and can drive 3-4 hours and be into some western hunting for mulies and whitetail. Also residents have a shot at Bighorn sheep, Antelope, and Elk, although it is a tough draw. Nebraska has a good variety of terrain from the eastern river bottoms to the western grasslands.
Niobrara is way up north on the Missouri River, quite a ways from Kearney, but not too far from where I live. We do business with the Ponca Tribe, good people.
Not saying these days you can let your guard down anywhere, but I would say Kearney and the surronding communities are about as close as it gets.

Kearney is a very nice larger town.   :) Good business atmosphere.  Branch of the university is also there.  Most important, Cableas has a store and warehouse there.  Good hunting in the area.  About two hours south and west is terrific pheasant and white tail hunting.  A little further and you can get into good prairie dog shooting.
