Synthetic stock fix needed.
« on: August 02, 2009, 02:34:27 AM »
Hi g'day and all that.
Iv'e just got a Handi 30-30 a while ago and have a few shoots under me belt with it.
Will shoot Jacketed stuff from 1" to1 1/2 " abouts with out any great accursizing yet.
Still breaking in the barrell.
I can get 2" down to 1 1/2 inches with cast bullets.

My trouble is Iv'e had to torque the plastic stock up now 3 times.
After todays dismal shoot and not being able to hit anything I was cleaning it and found the stock has worked loose again.
It seems to pivot on the action Ie: the stock will go in a verticle direction with a litlle bit of force.
Think it had an adverse effect on accurracy not counting my experimental loads as well (yeah right)

Is this common??
Will the plastic eventually compress or settle in after a bit??..or not.
Is there a glue /expoxy/ loctite I can use to weld the Bl@@dy on to the reciever???

Thanks in advance for any thoughts to cure this delema.

Yes I have done the nut up "real tight" each time.

Thanks in advance
Barrabruce

I would add a lock washer first, and if that doesn't hold, a little locktight on the stock bolt where it goes in the receiver.

Clear nail polish is a decent substitute also.

That is strange. Sounds like your threads might be stripped  :-\ suppose if thats the case you could always rethread it but I have never heard of anyone needing to.
Try the washer and a little of the clear nail polish as Mike mentioned, then see if you might need the rethread it.

 8) Has taken a while to reply..due to getting to the range and firing enough shells to see if it worked but a lock washer seems to have cured my issue with the loose butt. Thje treads are still in good nick. It had no washer so I gave it one...Hmmmm
Any way thanks for that

Ohh the groups have tightened up somewhat.  @1" with jacketed 150's and cast 1 1/4 " at 100 yrds. Paper patched to only 1 1/2 " at that range but I am just learning. Quite happy with the 30-30 in this set up.

Cheers and thanks

One sweet caliber! That old round has 10 times the class of any '06 or 308! The 30WCF shall live forever!!!
Happy shooting!!

I see you have fixed it. That's great.
But i thought I would mention, if you or anyone uses loctite. Make sure it is NOT red. Use the blue. The red is more permanent, sometimes to permanent. Blue is what we use in a truck shop. Red causes to much grief if you go taking things apart.

Be careful about rethreading it if you think you need to.  Rethreading means a larger bolt and a larger socket.  The larger socket won't fit down there.
