Mounting BuffClassic sight on standard 22" barrel
« on: July 03, 2009, 02:07:47 PM »
I have a BC set of sights (rear peep, front globe/inserts) that I got in anticipation of a BC barrel that never arrived.   I was contemplating mounting the set on my standard 45/70 barrel.   The rear peep goes on fine but I am at a loss as to the mounting of the front globe.....can it be done?    If not how high of a front blade will I need to get the barrel regulated?    Thanks for any advice/experience/knowledge...

The Peep and Firesights thread in the FAQs has the right front sight height combination listed, to use the globe sight you'd have to have a dovetail cut in the barrel.

Thanks Tim - I read earlier the FAQ's  but I wasn't sure about the globe...  Ive got some direction now.   May just sell the set and put on a red dot.   My eyes ain't what they used to be.

Cutting a dovetail slot is basic stuff for a gunsmith.
You may also be able to mount the globe front in a screw on ramp, but this would likely raise the site up too high. Possibuly the lowest globe front/ thinnest rap combo could work, but I haven't tried it to be sure.

Thanks Tim - I am calculating from the Williams catalog for the front site height.  As an FYI  the link to Brownells Height calculator (just under PEEP and FIRESIGHTS in the FAQ's)  was no longer valid when I clicked on there today.
Don't know if they moved it or discontinued it, but it gave a message that it was no longer available.

Yeah, I know, they updated their website and apparently did away with it, I edited the thread last week with the alternatives that they have on their website now, no online calculator tho.  :-\

No, that's one of the new links that I added, the old one you could plug the numbers in and it would calculate the required sight height for you.
