McDonalds as food?
« on: July 01, 2009, 05:11:11 AM »
I realize McDonalds is a popular restaurant, but I simply can't bring myself to recognize most of the items on their menu as food. I do like their Egg McMuffin as an occasional breakfast, and and their cheese burger as an occasional treat food when I'm travelling and in the mood for junk. The rest of it is totally off limits to me. I just won't eat it, or even consider it to be food.

What is your relationship with McDonald's food?

My fast food of choice is Subway.

Other chains I won't touch are Arby's, White Castle, Burger King (except the occasional whopper jr.), KFC, gosh almost all of them. I just go to the sandwich places, like Subway and Quiznos.

For burgers, I'd rather make them at home on the grill.

I wouldn't have thrown Arby's in there with the others.  The french dip and the crispy chicken are both solid sandwiches.

I do agree about Subway and especially Quiznos... Two of my favorites as well.

I don't eat McDonalds other than breakfast and then it's the breakfast burritos.

Can't stand McDonalds except for their coffee.  They offer a good cup of Joe for a drive through place.

Subway and Quizno's are regular choices.  If I'm gonna be bad I'll go for Whataburger (primarily in Texas).

I agree with you, in that if it's gonna be a burger I'm firing up the grill!  Hmmm, that sounds good for dinner tonight.   ;D

Being an outside salesman on on the road a lot.  I will frequent the drive through going from place to place.  Especally when I knew I would be stuck in traffic most of the way.
The Egg mcmuffins are good and some times lunch or Dinner depending.  They do have good French fries.
But If I have a choice I like Wendy's for burgers.  Hot and greasy.  Sorry juicy.  But they dumped the Cheese burger deluxe and the dolts at the drive through window can not understand a Bacon cheese burger deluxe with out the bacon.  They get the no onion but....
Just started going back to Subway as one is not far from my office and they went to Coke products.  But with
Being on the road I have found that I can have a diet coke or two and not have problems.  Diet Pepsi on the other hand has something in it that when you have to go it is right now! and urgent so I tend to avoid the places owned by Pepsi. Taco Bell, KFC and Arbys.  And I like the Arby's stuff occasionally.
Not a fan of Burger king since they went Microwave.  All of thier cooking is done in a central kitchen and reheated at the restaraunt.  Gives the bread a goofy texture.  Before when thye had the grills in the stores i really liked Burger king.
Oh well.  My favorite car food is Sushi from Wholefoods market.
But nothing beats grilling burgers at home.  I make a steak tar tar burger that is great.  Try it.  My parents had a dinner party and made steak tar tar.  I took the left overs the next day, made burgers and tossed them on the grill with kaiser rolls and swiss cheese.  WOW was that good.  The capers were a little strange at first, I was in High School at the time.  but the heat makes them good.

I worked long hrs. and out of town alot . Most days i ate all 3 meals out . Most of the time i ate at the establishments you listed . Now i don't eat at them other than a ham biscuit or such as a treat for breakfast one in a while .
The reason is a problem with Blood sugar caused at least in part from eating junk food from such places . I don't blame them as i ate there they didn't force me ( cost was the reason more than any other factor ) .
But all should consider what they eat and what it will do to you , I DID NOT and am paying the price .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Being a heart patient and needing to keep my cholesterol down, and also having diabetes, I avoid McDonalds, Burger king, Taco Bell, and all other fast food places.

Once a week I will splurge with my diet, and meet my son and wife in town.  Usually not fast food, but sometimes we just feel like a burger.  Or when we are traveling to Anchorage, we will stop at a fast food joint.  Arby's Roast Beef is lowest in fat, so they are candidates, and we don't have them in the Interior of Alaska.  The nearest one is 360 miles away.   Carl's Jr. has a Carb Free Burger, a regular hamburger wrapped in lettuce leafs instead of a bun, for me.  But usually we go to Subway where I get the Veggie Delight On Flat Bread.

Once a year when I go to Tennessee, I throw all caution to the wind and my brothers and I go to the Krystal, and I will usually eat 6 to 8 of those little burgers.  Glad they don't have Krystal and White Castle here in Alaska.  Unhealthy, but they sure do taste good.

As for Sushi?  I'm sorry mcwoodduck, but we call that stuff bait.  I just can't bring myself to eat that.  Reminds me of being down on the Russian River on the Kenai.  The folks from the Far East will open up a Salmon and pull the eggs out and start eating them right there on the river bank, raw.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"

I never say never but I never eat anything else there! I did eat a fruit cup one day.

If I only ate things that were good for me I would be bored, grumpy and healthy!

Like Mickey dees for coffee and sausage bicuit.Jack in the box for the tacos and jumbo jacks. Thoses tacos are living proof you can do something pallatable with dog and cat meat! When I was working in Minnesota, I discovered Culvers which was fantastic. they built one here in Phoenix two years ago,and thankfully they are an hour away. Long John silvers and der wienerschnizle are ok. Most other fast food has as much appeal as cold C-rats.

Mcdonalds breakfast burrito is about it for me anymore at that place.

My favorite would have to be a small regional chain, Runza, cooked cabbage, chopped onions, ground meat wrapped in pastry dough sometimes with cheese or swiss cheese and mushrooms added. I make the same thing at home with frozen bread dough and it's excellent.

I know what you mean about eating on the road all week, I did that for 8 years or so, McDonalds is excellent for that. Let their pasty ketchup and synthetic cheese on their cheeseburgers get cool and coagulate and it's about the least messy of all of them.

I get a Big Mac Attack every now and then, but never go out of my way to get one. Big fan of the Subway stuff because I can dictate (that's right, I'm a sandwich Dictator ;) ) what goes on it. Can't help myself at Dairy Queen when a vanilla cone dipped in Cherry is involved. Don't care much about the Dairy Queen food except for their French Fries - those babies are fine.

I don't LIKE to eat at McD's but for me often there's no choice. You have to put a big rig where you can find parking. There is a Subway by our warehouse I can get into and they are great. I like the Veggie sub.

They do have above average coffee at McD's which makes it work while.

Wendy's has a new burger for $.99 they call a double stack. Three of those will usually last me all day long. Mustard and onion only

As has been said, McDonalds for breakfast and coffee. I like the sausage McMuffin though with strawberry jelly on it. Their chicken sandwiches and snack wraps aren't bad though.

I do like Arby's, and love the angry whopper.

McDonalds is NASTY and VERY UNHEALTHY!!!  It isn't just McDonalds, it is EVERY fast food chain.  I avoid eating out at all cost.  We cook at least three meals a day everyday.  When we have to eat out the children usually request McDonalds and if that is were we are going Matt doesn't eat anything, so we usually do Sonic when neccessary.  I like their slushes...yum!  We eat the occasional pizza from Little Caesars cuz there cheap.  As for breakfast on the go...nothing beats a steak and cheese biscuit from Jacks.

I see on your profile that you are from California.  You must be talking about Jack in the Box.  We don't have those down here in the south that I know of.  We have Jacks. I didn't see one the whole time I lived in your neck of the woods.  As far as I know there has NEVER been anything like a cheader chibatta on our menu.

Do you folks still have Church's Fried Chicken down there in the South? Used to eat at those a lot when I lived in San Antonio. They always had a big glass jar of Jalapeño Peppers (two bits for four, if I remember correctly). Of course, now that I think about it, almost every restaurant had a big jar of Jalapeños on the counter.

Yes Heather Juan in La Caja (Pronounced Ka Ha).Spanish for jack in the Box.
Or as my friends worker calls it Yack in d Box.
By you it is Hardee's i think.
No Jacks here we have In and Out.  and the big thing is to know what is not on the menue that they will make.
Like a three color shake, and amimal style fries.
We do have Churches Fried chicken here.
Do you have the awefull Weiner snitzel?  When I moved out here and saw them I thought great fast german food and pictured a veal, chicken or other critter breaded and fried on Black bread with vegitation and potato salad.  NO  It was lousy chilli dog with the playdough orange cheese.  i think they only stay in business because the line at in and out is too long.

Right I forgot Carl's.
Do you want me to send you a In and Out Tee shirt or truck sticker?
Del Taco too cut the stuff i liked from them so I don't go as much and they are not around the Bay area that I have seen.
Down south there was one on the way to and from the range and I was known to pull in to the pistol shoot finishing a steak and egg breakfast barrito.

I have to be in pretty desperate straits to eat at McDonalds.  I haven't been to Burger King since they started the ad campaign featuring that plastic headed faggot M-Fer.   I do like Sonic though, foot long chili cheese Coney's, with onions.

Try to avoid McD's, simply because of all the money they donated to Handgun Control. Don't really like the burgers that much anyway. Burger King isn't as good as it use to be. But, between them or Wendy's, it's a toss up. When I'm on the road, it's usually whatever is close to the motel I'm staying at. There is a Sonic being built on the main road about 4 miles from us. I know my wife has already said that she like's them over the big 3 around here. But my homemade burgers will beat anything you can buy, so it might be awhile before I try a Sonic. gypsyman

When I was living in GA I loved

Hardees San Francisco Breakfast sandwich I think it was called. (way better than Mickey' D's mcmuffin)

Some of my go-to fast food chains were
Philly's (love a good cheese steak)
Shclotzsky's (great sandwiches)
Checkers (fries are awesome)

For Friday night take home
Mrs Winners (WAYYY Better than KFC, Use to give you a free gallon of tea with every family order)

Sunday breakfast after church
Cracker Barrel

McDonals is just gross. If you want a real burger Fudruckers is the only place to go.  You can get up to a 3lb burger if you want.  Then pile on all the extras on yourself like onions, mushrooms, lettuce etc... I like Fudruckers and Checkers for burgers.  Subway does not put enough meat on their subs for me.  I like Fire House in my neck of the woods for the subs.

TeamNelson referred to a fascinating movie that is very much worth watching: Supersize Me. I rented it, and all things considered, it was a good and factual and fair documentary. It was done in an entertaining way, and was not "out to get" McDonalds. The message was simply a restatement of common sense, that if you eat that stuff a lot, and to excess, then it's bad for you. But there is much more to it than that, such as very entertaining documentary of a couple who has their own large collection of McDonalds memorabilia. There were some "extras" on the DVD I rented. One was an interview with the author of a book called "Fast Food Nation", which is a good read about various aspects of the fast food industry, including franchising and labor practices. It's a good book for any student of business.
