I am a police officer and never have or will write a seat belt ticket. I do not feel the government has the right to that you have no chose in wearing it or not. When I stop some one and they do are not wearing one I tell them it is the law and that the next officer to stop them may not feel the same as me but it is up to them. I am sure that most would rather get a ten dollar fine for no seat belt than the other I give them but that is a whole other topic. I also do not write the ticket because when I am on duty I do not wear mine because it is trouble some to put on and take off when getting in and out of the car forty times a night. I do wear one when off duty but that is my personal chose.

I also know that seat belts can cause injuries as well as prevent them. One of my aunts T-boned a car that ran a stop sign and she was the only one wearing a belt and was the only person to go to the hospital with injuries. She suffered two cracked ribs and damaged muscles in her neck. So I do not see the health insurance savings argument in this discussion.

Yeah Bravo! At least you don't write tickets for something you don't comply with. And Bravo for wearing your seat belt when off duty!
Apparently you see some redeeming value in them. Be careful in those high speed chases!

Lot's of studies that show seat belts do in general save more lives than they take in accidents.

BL is studies are made to say whatever the sponsor wants them to say. I still think that being restrained in a car accidents is much better than being tossed around in the inevitable violence of a crash. I'll take a couple of broken ribs to prevent my face from smacking the dash... I'd much rather my kids be buckled in than thrown out of the window in a crash. Sometimes, there is just nothing you can do. No safety system will prevent death or injury one hundred percent of the time in all circumstances. I'd much rather play the odds of surviving a crash with a seatbelt than without. What y'all do is up to you. But I sure hope you aren't a parapalegic and I have to pay your hospital bills with my higher insurance rates...

Its about the money! I believe if it was about safety, instead of an annoying buzzer in your vehicle, it would not start until you were buckled up! But then the revenue would go way down!

That being said, wearing a seat belt is a good thing, but it is tyrannical to have to wear one by law!

The reason I wear a seat belt is because it's very expensive here in Michigan to pay the fine...VERY expensive. Also...if you do not have proof of insurance, it's 500 bucks for that, even if you have insurance, you have to have that piece of paper in the car.
Mostly, I try to not contribute to this tax and spend state any way I can...they have taxed all the businesses away and only have fines to keep them afloat now.

About everything I do now is only to keep from paying someone....I don't believe anything "they" say about the "cost" of whatever....because "they" are corrupt and just make things up for the most part.

It's about money...at least in this state...nothing else. Last I heard is was 65 bucks here for seat belt fines, 95 bucks for the kids I think....1 miles an hour over speed is 80 bucks and it goes up from there...

They need money pretty bad here...they taxed it all away...

You have some large fines up North. Where I work here in MO seat belt 10 no insurance 122.50 no child restraint 42.50 speeding is 22.50 plus 1 for every mile over. What I do not like are people going 20 plus over the speed limit in a school zone and people with out insurance. If you want to drive and possibly damage my truck then you better have a way to pay for the damage.

Would it be better if I wrote some one a ticket for every thing that is wrong during a traffic stop? On most traffic stops I can find 3 to 4 violations and only write for one. Do you know how many people drive around with out a license plate light? It is something they require by law here and you can be fined for it but I just tell them to fix it before someone else writes them for. How about the rolling stop or no turn signal or taillight out. There are very few traffic violations I will write. How many of you every time you get ready to drive check all your lights. I do not think many people check all there lights before they go to the store and then check them again when they leave the store. Do you think you should be wrote a ticket because you have a short and a bulb blows or it is just old and blows while driving down the road. I do not agree with all of the traffic laws so yes I choose what I will enforce.

Let's examine this on a different level.
I live on the ship channel of Houston, Texas.
There are 100 refineries, of different kinds, within 5 miles of me.
They spew out more chemicals than L.A. can think about, and, I breath them all---have, for 45 years.
They have all kinds of regulations--they still spit out chemicals.
I choose too live here. I CHOOSE.
Laws don't protect they give folks paperwork to report what happens.
When will folks learn that they make choices and then learn that they are responsible for those choices.
Tell them and educate them and then let it go---folks have a way of doing as they wish, no matter how others try and control.

Getting out of your car being searched is easy all you have to do is say no when they ask. No officer is going to make a car sit until they get a warrant. And it is almost impossible to get a warrant to search a car for a traffic violation. And the racial profile argument I think is stupid because in Mo we have forms that we fill out and sign. If we stop to many people of a race other than our own then the state knows about it and we can lose our certification.

So how does that work if you happen to hire a black cop in a state that is 86% white?

Seems like due to simple statistics, with all things being equal he'd be pulling over about 86% people of a race that wasn't his own.

This has happened and officers have gotten into trouble. The high ups in the state do not want to look at what percent of the population is of what race they just look at what race is being stopped. You can fight it and it is a long process but it can be done in those situations.

Okay, that's interesting...what if they stop somebody for a seat belt violation. Then a 'probabal cause' pops in the officer's head...can they proceed without warrants.? (probable cause was the term I was trying to think of earlier)

In order to search a car you would have to have good pc. If you smelled marijuana or seen evidence of drugs or possibley a gun or if the car matched one that you had a report was involved in a crime. Most of those situations you can search with out a warrant but something just popping into an officers head it would be hard to get some one to sign off on that warrant.

Forgot to add that in MO right now you can not use some one not wearing a seat belt as the reason to stop a car. At one time you could then you could not then you could now you can't. But like I said before it does not matter if you can because I do not agree with the seat belt law.

When i was in high school I had a van , Had nothing in the back but a spare tire , jack , news papers i collected and sold and tools . It was winter so i had a curtian behind the front and only seats to help hold the heat up front . Got pulled one morning on the way to school . The policeman asked to see the back i said no . He said i can get a SW . I told him to go for it . HE DID ! 20 min later his SGT. shows up with the SW . To this day i don't know what the PC was . The funny part was the SGT. was head of the sunday school dept. i was in at church . When they opened the back door it was funny . Well at that point i was late for school so the SGT. made the officer write me an excuse for being late . The point is in Va. if they feel a need to serch they do . Here lately they remove seats etc. and leave often times with out putting things back. I know of one guy who had to get his truck towed after the serch as it was not driveable. When he called a lawyer he was told it would cost more than he would recover.

In Va. the State Police will stand at toll booths and look for seat belt violation , child seat violation , expired inspection etc.
Since i live near their main office and school we see alot of it as they train whole classes here .
We now have easy-pass so people went thru. so fast they couldn't see so they just lowered the speed limit at toll booths , can't help but wonder if that waspart of the reason .
