What if H&R made...... A DOUBLE!!!!!!
« on: May 25, 2009, 03:59:18 AM »
I've been longing for a double rifle for some time.  I also love my Handis.  This leads me to the obvious dream.

If H&R could do a double for twice the price of the singles, maybe even a little more.  Let's say $600 in a plain wood and open sights.  They would still be less than the nearest competition and WAY less than the high end which is right where they are with the Handi relative to other sporters.  The lowest priced double I'm aware of is the discontinued Remington Spartan 45-70 for just over a grand.  Next step up the price ladder starts at two or three times that and the high end has no ceiling.  I've seen doubles for $25k and I know there are some for more.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my idle dreams of guns that could be.  I figure if anybody else would apreciate the idea, they would be found here.

Think about it, a double in 45-70; with a 12g, and a 30-30 and a 22 hornet barrel accessories.  Now that's just killing me.

I've been dreaming the same dream.  A 45-70 double Handi.  I also looked at the Spartan, but I could not see it as worth the cost.  Too light and too thin chambers for my liking, even though I did give it some serious thought.  I have a friend who has a .458 custom drilling, and sometimes he will let me hold it and fondle it when I visit.  Thats about as close as I've come so far................... :P

As we speak, I have hand drawn sketches, that are 3 months old, trying to figure out how to retrofit the trigger assemblies with a single double set, should someone try to fix two handi actions together.  Have to splay the hammers outwards also.

Figured the easy way is to build a double rifle off of stronger sxs shotgun actions.

But H&R would have saved me a lot of effort, to date, if they had a double 30-30
.

(Tell me you wouldn't buy one and use blackpowder loads and cast bullets in it for deer)

Holy Cow!  Man just imagine, a pair of 30 inchers in 45-70 sitting on top of an English fowler's rear stock 8).  That is sexy to think about!

There was or still is a double .45-70 called a Kodiak that came in at about a grand as well. The same rifle could also be had in a M/L version with no FFL needed. IIRC it was a double .58 cal.

What we as mere mortals don't comprehend is the great deal of effort and experience it takes to regulate the two barrels to hit the same point of aim at a given distance.

This was also posted on another site I visit. I'll keep y'all posted on the progress.

I BUILT A 45-70 DOUBLE FROM A SHOTGUN ANYONE INTERESTED IN A REVIEW ON HOW IT'S DONE? PACO
