I've been thinking of taking 2 handi 45/70's and somehow fabricating them together to make a double rifle. I would have to make my own stock. I could link the triggers to function together. I don't think you could link the release levers together very easy, but you could push both to get it to open. In my mind I can make this a reality for around $500. What do you guys think? Would I be ruining 2 good handi's, or creating 1 awsome double?

Corey, I think I'd just wait for the Spartan double rifle for just a bit more money and you wouldn't have all the trouble or weight of 2 frames and regulating both barrels.

Tim, waiting on the double would make more sence. I just think a one of a kind would be neat. Have you heard anything about when the Spartan will be available? Seems like it was in the Remington book 2006, but not in the 2007 book.

Well, waiting for Remington to offer it may be almost as crazy, actually!!

They keep saying it's coming and people keep asking when, the singles are available and seem to be good shooters, why they can't get the sxs going is a good question! $:-\$

Quick, I suspect it has a lot to do with Remington's management, they grabbed up the Russian line and then seemed to gut it. This year the SPR94 is down to 223/12 gauge, and the double rifles are dropped from the catalog. On the double rifles I don't know what happened but with the combination guns it is a marketing decision because EAA brought them in for a while in a whole variety of calibers. I too am one of the ones that thought the 45-70 sxs would be a neat rifle, an affordable double rifle though would be quite a marketing coup if they could pull it off. I don't know how many people would actually buy them though. But probably as many as would buy some of the other stuff they have came out with.

I also see a link to Baikal Canada, I don't care where it comes from, I just want one in at least 45-70. I can't get any list of possible calibers, except off one site that lists .308, and 30-..... I'm assuming they mean 30-06, but I am more interested in a 45-70 or larger. Does anyone have any info as to calibers/availability? Thanks.

TGS used to list EAA firearms, but they no longer do, they do list the single shot Spartans, some are in stock, but nothing in .45-70.

I am not sure about the new Remington version, but I know dad ordered one last week and it is supposed to be here next week. He has been wanting a 45-70 double for awhile and one of the guys at the sportsman club that had just opened a new gun shop had access to get one. When dad gets it I will go down and check it out myself

trying to talk him into shooting blackpowder out of it already!

Shouldn't kick to hard at 14+ pounds.

Not that I think its a good idea but.
Maybe you could use longer pins through both recivers and make "custom" wood to make one forarm and stock.
Then you would just be out your labor and some wood.

P.S. wouldn't you want the triggers seperate.

I've handled a Baikal double in 30/06, very nice rifle!
Seems to be the only caliber they come in here. All my friends want 45/70s.

The more I think about it the simpler it sounds.
Poor boys dangerous game rifle.
You can't get any more reliable than two complete actions.
Seems like the stock should be the hardest part.
Its a good thing I don't have any lions, tigers, or bears here or I would try it.

The double rifle is NOT in the new Remington catalog so I think they have decided against importing it for whatever reason.

Well its now an official project! I ordered 2 syn. 45/70's from walmart today for $447.26 out the door. You should have seen the guy's face when I answered his question "Why are you buying 2 just alike?" When they come in I will be putting the synthetic stocks sets in the classifieds for sale. Fifty bucks shipped each set should be a fair price for new sets. That will get my investment down to around $370. Add a chunk of laminated wood for around $90 plus a limbsaver pad $30 and $50 for the odds and ends I should have my double rifle 45/70 for around $540. We'll see what happens.

I wonder if a side by side shotgun (12 ga) would stand up to the pressure of black powder loads with a pair of 45-70 barrels instead of the shotgun barrels.

You can get a set of 4570 inserts for a shotgun from MCA sports. Some times you just want to make something to have fun with. Play and have fun. tireman

Regulating the barrels would be a problem.

You could get an EAA sxs 20" barrel with the removable chokes and put in the factory adapter kits. They run about 159 a piece for the kits and the price of the shotgun. They have bushings and screws for POI adjustment and I think come with sights.

Just got back from walmart with both 45/70's!!! Tim I had not even thought of trying to regulating to one impact point. I was just going to use the iron sights of each barrel to aim with depending on which side i was shooting, but you now have me thinking. Before I try to marry these rifles to unite as one I have a question for you guys. Is this thing going to be legal when I get done with it? I don't want to break any laws. Any thoughts?

You should be good to go the barrels are over 16 inches and its not a class3 so there is nothing to worry about. I can't wait to here how it works. Good luck Jason

ccoorreeyy I was just wondering which Wal-Mart you got your 45-70 at. I have checked Sports South and they did not have any in stock. I have been looking everywhere for one. I had two places say they would have one each in this week one called today said he got one yesterday evening for 375.00 plus tax just do not want to pay that much when you can get one at Wal-Mart for a little over 200.00. I was just wondering.By the way thats a heck of an idea you have come up with. I can't wait and see that bad boy!

The walmart in Griffin Georgia got them for me. $375 is way high unless it come with a leupold!!!
