Why?
« on: May 07, 2009, 04:24:18 AM »
Have you guys done this to me?  All I did was buy a new NEF shotgun, & in the process of trying to find out more info on NEF, found that NEF is H & R, & from there I decided I had to have a single shot (Handi) rifle.  Couple months later, I find a .223 synthetic, think about it a few days & buy it (really wanted something I could hunt deer with, .243 or larger).  Then, I find this board.  Send in the .223 to be fitted with .308 & 20 ga barrels (in Feb, still waiting).  More reading on GBO.  Decide a .45-70 would be cool, if I find one I'll buy it, but likely won't ever actually find one.  Fast forward a couple weeks to a stop at Fisherman's to  check the ammo situation, & lo & behold, on the rack are a couple of Handi's.  One looked real interesting.  Gotta ask.  Yep, .45-70 synthetic (I actaully like the synthetics, although had to weight the stock on this one).  I'll take it.  Two weeks later, walk into Bimart to check the ammo situation.  Walk out with a .17hmr sportster.  I'm thinking, that's it, I'm done.  Of course, I'm stilll reading this board nearly daily.  Decide a CR45 would be cool to have, maybe.  So what happens, but I go to pickup my new Bond Arms Ranger, and lo & behold, a new CR45 up against the wall.  Ask to look at it, ask the guy if they normally stock them.  Nope, just ordered it to see what it looked like.  "I'll take it".  You guys are killing me.  Not to mention my wife if she ever figures it out.

Same thing happened to me.  I had a NEF youth 20 gauge, then got a Handi in 44 magnum which turned out to be a fine rifle.  Since then I have acquired barrels in 223, 30-06 and 243.  I traded the 20 gauge barrel off and put my 44 magnum barrel on the  SB1 frame so now actually only have rifles but I may soon hopefully find a 20 gauge ultra slug barrel for the SB1 frame.

It's a good thing CDC hasn't figured out that Handiholicism is the real threat, not Swine Flu ;)

If you keep them moving around in and out with gun cases full and empty another trick is dbl cases "one goes out 2 comes in" some may be wise but so far mines baffled and confused if she really new there are 29 back there I would have to come clean to Handiholicism and beg for treatment ;) Also if ya keep swapping and tradin those packages that come to the door I just say "you remember that one package I sent out " well this is what I traded it for. Kurt's got the right idea....remember,a moving target is hard to hit. If they are all H+R's it's a little harder for her to keep track of em....when she says "hey,is that a new gun" I respond " oh no dear,I've had that for a long time,it just looks like my other ones". Then a smart man makes himself scarce for a couple hours, and bring flowers when you return.......

Your story sounds familiar and many of us can attest to the attraction to these handi's. Welcome to the club.

Well, a friend of mine once told me that there are two kinds of women to be concerned with - those that shoot, in which case she'll help you pick them out & bring them in; and those that don't and don't care - once you get a new gun in the house, you're OK, because then it's always been there.  So far, he's been right.  Oh yeah - the third kind of woman would be the anti-gun woman, which isn't a concern, because there wouldn't be any real attraction, right?

I think a big part of the problem is the price of a Handi.  They are affordable enough that you can often enough justify buying one.  I mean, it's only...... Next month it's only another......  Next thing you know, you have spent more money than you want to admit but you did it $250 at a time.

There aren't too many center fire sporting rifles that you can buy for the price of a Handi.  There are also not many arms with as many options, so you end up getting one of these and one of those.  Can't forget to grab one of these over here too.  Madness.  I'm as aflicted as you, my friends.

I think the best ploy is to stock and scope them so they all look the same, and just keep moving them around.  That way she never knows what she's looking at. ;) ;) ;)  The only problem with that is I don't either if I need one in a hurry. ??? ???  The full Allen 206 cartridge holders on the stocks are my best quick identification.

A nice thing about handis is that they are so slim that you can line up 20 of them in less space than you could line up 10 bolt guns.

There is such a thing as "Gun Critical Mass".  This varies from wife to wife. Each one will have a point at which she can't tell if there is a new one or if it has been there awhile.

Good shooting
