Older 410 frame and a 357 mag barrel???

I was looking in our gun cabinet the other day and we have an old single shot 410 shotgun which just so happens to be and H&R.  Were the 410 frames the same size and strength as the SB1 frames of today?  I was thinking about getting a 357 Max barrel and putting it on there.  I would just go check but I am like 2 hours away and won't be home till next weekend.

I think that answer resides in the FAQs.  Im going to do a Max also, but I'm putting it on a SB2 frame.  I wouldn't trust an old Topper frame.

This is out of the FAQ's , myself , I'd NOT do it .

Can I put a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame?

Rifle barrels cannot be put a shotgun frame since the shotgun frame is not heat treated to handle the pressure. Since rifle frames are heat treated investment cast alloy, they are safe to use higher pressures, the lower pressure shotgun barrels don't present a hazard to the firearm and/or user as the inverse does. The larger firing pin and surrounding hole in the frame is also an issue.

Well you raise a good point with the Max, but I would of bet money that you could put a 357 mag on a shot gun frame without any consequences.  Thanks for informing me that what I am thinking about doing could possibly maim me and leave me disemboweled, but I know I have read somewhere about 357 barrels on sb1 frames.  Tim could you enlighten me?

I was looking on the H&R website:

NEW 357 Mag (SB1-S35)*

Their factory offering of the 357 mag is on an sb1 frame, so how much more powerful is the Max than the mag?

I guess the real question is how similar is your old 410 Topper frame to the SB1 frames.  I suppose since the 357 Max would be a handloading proposition that the level of pressure you subject your frame to is up to you you might be all right if you treat it gently.

Matt, H&R will fit 357 and 44 mag barrels to any SB1 frame made 1987 and later, if your frame was made since 1987, you should be fine, if it was made before 1987, it may still work fine since the original H&R offered the 357 on some of their old cast iron frames, the part of the FAQs Stimpy quoted was written before H&R started offering SB1 357 and 44 mags and still applies to other rifle chamberings.

My only consurns here are the age of the frame and the added pressure / head thurst of the MAX compaired to a standard 357 Mag , I'm not sure if it would be an issue on a newer frame though .

I did by mistake shoot my 25/06 on a newer SB-1 frame for a few rounds , the only down side was that the primers were flowing back around the firing pin , I did take the frame to work and had one of the weld insp. mag it , and found no stress cracks .  ;)

As Stimpy hinted at, I'd be very cautious even when trying a 357mag barrel on a pre-87 H&R frame, I'd do like Dieselbuilder did and tie it down and test fire it remotely just to be safe....that is if another barrel can even be fitted to it.  ;)

Tim,

Thanks for the quick feedback.  I think I'll just hold out and see if I can find an SB2 frame because I will eventually ream it out to max and I like all my fingers.  Now for a barrel reamed for max you can still fired 357mag and 38special in it right? I know this is in the faq's but while I'm asking, do the 357 barrels have an ejector or an extractor?

Yes, you can shoot the smaller .38s in the Max, current production barrels will be extractors, have been for a couple years now, H&R only uses ejectors on rimfires and shotgun barrels now.

This whole discussion seems to be like "can I kill a deer with my Red Ryder".  No.  Just spend the extra 50 bucks and get a SB2 frame.  JMHO.

I came to the same conclusion.  The whole point was that I already had the 410 and hardly ever use it so I was going to see about putting it to good use.  But then again that's why I looked before I leaped.
