Sorry to hear about your loss.  You know this doesn't sound like someone just looking for something to steal but someone that knew you kept the gun there.  Do you have any questionable friends or in my case relatives?

Pete,
I completely acknowledge the great folks on this site - I have had excellent dealings with some of them, and even met a few. This place is like being part of a family.

But, I must say, the thing that touched me the most about this thread was your approach that it might have been somebody just trying to get by, trying to help his family.

Whether that is actually the case or not we will likely never know, and most folks think it unlikely and it was really a sleaze-bag thief and he should be punished appropriately.

I actually fall into the latter category, a creep took it and should be punished... but that, really is beside the point. What got me was your generous, open-minded way of looking at it. No, I hung the rifle there just the day before because I was having pigeon and woodchuck problems.  It had never been there before.  The word is out among the logging crowd that I'm having a select cut done on my land this year, and I have been pestered by loggers wanting the job.  There is always at least two vehicles in the yard, so it looks like someone is home.  The overhead door was open, the rifle was hanging there, and I think someone went to the house, found nobody there and went to the barn looking for me, didn't find me but found the rifle.

Lucky Joe, you and all of you here are welcome at my home anytime.  I'm about 60 miles north and west of the Mackinac Bridge.
