Ultra varmint

I'm interested in a Ultra varmint fluted but I would like to know your impressions about it. Also any recommandations for a caliber for target shooting only? Thanks.

I have one in 223 and it is a tack driver right out of the box.

I've got one in .243 Win and with some work, it is doing great! For target, I would second the recommendation for the .223. People seem to have good luck with them. I really like the Choate stock on mine! I would recommend getting one of the cheek rests from Choate to add to it. I have a Choate stock on one of my custom Remington 700's and it came with a high and low cheek rest. Since I used the high for it, I tested the low on my handi, and with a 44mm obj. scope in high rings, it's a good fit for me. I also removed the butt pad and added some lead shot to the cavity in the stock to add some weight so I can pop it open on the bags and it not fall forward with it supported under the hinge. It also helps to reduce recoil, a plus when shooting a bunch of targets at the range. Makes it a bit heavy for field use, but I mainly shoot it from a rest anyway.

I will say that although these rifles are capable of plenty accuracy for most people, it may or may not right out of the box. Some need a simple cleaning, some need to "break in" over time, some badly need a trigger job, etc. If you demand for a rifle to shoot .0625 MOA right out of the box, then you may need to look elsewhere.

Get one and try it out, worst case sell it here or part it out and get a new toy.

I had one in .243, I wouldn't recomend it for target or anything else where a small group is needed!
Mine was the 24" bull barrel (not fluted) but not accurate either!
The smallest grain bullets were ok at best, everything else was, well, not so good.

+1 on the .223.  Have one and it shoots great!  I also added lead to the stock (and in the pistol grip - if you want to know how, let me know) and had the trigger done.  They do shoot well and the stock is great.  Great gun overall.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

I got fluted bbl on the .204 Ruger, .223Rem and a .225Winchester all of the fluted bbl are accurate in my book. If you don't handload the .223 is probly your best choice otherwise the .204 is a lot of fun and very accurate. I'm looking for a 22-250 Ultra Varmint myself right now. Kurt

I have one in 22-250.  Fluted Bull Barrel.  Choate.   Burris 6 X 20.

Tack driver with 55gr boat tails.

Son has the same.  It only likes 50gr boat tails.

YMMV.

Can you give me an idea of your grouping at 100 yards?
