Double 10 -
« on: November 26, 2008, 02:27:40 AM »
FINALLY - I got back my Churchill Windsor I from the 'smith.  He made two beautiful matched cylinder bore chokes.

Now I'm in the process of making my mind up on what to shoot.  12ga slugs (Lyman) are a few thousanths too large to fit into the shot cup.  Pumkin ball is maybe 15 thou over for the same.  (By weight I could get two of them in there.)

So it's time to make a mould.

Suggestions?

edelwiess has a mold for a900 gr slug. Also check out Nitroexpress.com there is a bore gun/paradox section and there are some guys who know all the ins and outs. I also have been trying to find out if ed rayl could make some extension chokes for a 10 bore. There was a combo 10 ga/ 10 bore muzzleloader a while back. Unfortunately I snoozed and lost. It was on a Handi frame. Anyway I figure if he could do a muzzleloader barrel, He could do a reg barrel or some sections for turning and threading. Anyway that is my backburner winter proj. My primary is a 20ga fh. That darn ED HUBEL JUST MAKES IT SO INTERESTING.

Moxgrove -

THANKS!

I do a little work with 20ga and 12ga (Handi and BPS).

The 'smith that did mine does nothing but chokes and does them WELL.  It took a while on mine since he had to program it from scratch being an odd one.

I'll look at their designs, thanks for the references.  Took a look at NEI's too.  Probablly cut chips during Christmas break.

Cat Wisperer

In front of me I have a copy of a April 1982 article by Don Zutz from Guns Magazine. This was of a lot of interest to me then when I first got a 10-ga Magnum. He said that a 1-3/4 ounce slug mold for the 10-ga was available from Larry Allen, Dept. G, 204 Vaughn Street, Yates City, Illinois 61572. He said they cast slugs have an average diameter of 0.761-inch. He gave four different loads (all using Remington hulls) but different powders and he gave test barrel pressures.

In this article he also gave a load using a 465-grain 12-ga slug from a lyman mold using a Ballistics products wad with Federal hulls. With that load he got 1,500 fps and it was reported to give 3-1/2-ich groups at 50 yards out of a Mag-10 Roadblocker.

I've only shot Federal 10-ga slugs in my Ithaca Mag-10. With an improved cylinder choke tube in the barrel I got about 10-inch groups at 50 yards, and that was with clip-on open sights. I thought the poor grouping was the gun rather than the ammo so later when I got a 10-ga barrel for my Thompson Center TCR's I had one choke tube opened up to cylinder and tried it out for accuracy with a scope sight. Again I got about a 10-inch group at 50 yards and as one can probably imagine, recoil out of a 8-pound gun in 10-ga magnum was terrible.

I did shoot one deer with a Federal 10-ga slug. It was a doe of about 120 pounds and it was facing me. I got lucky and centered the slug in its chest. The slug exited the deer through one of the rear quarters about 2 inches from its rear vent. I got a feeling it could have made it through another deer or two after that! The deer fell down and then got up and ran about 60 yards and died. It left a blood trail on the snow that one could have followed at a full run.

I also shot one deer using the 10-ga with OO buckshot. It was a broadside shot at a doe at about 30 yards. Most of the 00 buckshot went completly through the deer (in one side and out the other).

If you want details on the Don Zutz loads send me your email address and I'll send you photos of the article.
