Cat Wisperer
In front of me I have a copy of a April 1982 article by Don Zutz from Guns Magazine. This was of a lot of interest to me then when I first got a 10-ga Magnum. He said that a 1-3/4 ounce slug mold for the 10-ga was available from Larry Allen, Dept. G, 204 Vaughn Street, Yates City, Illinois 61572. He said they cast slugs have an average diameter of 0.761-inch. He gave four different loads (all using Remington hulls) but different powders and he gave test barrel pressures.
In this article he also gave a load using a 465-grain 12-ga slug from a lyman mold using a Ballistics products wad with Federal hulls. With that load he got 1,500 fps and it was reported to give 3-1/2-ich groups at 50 yards out of a Mag-10 Roadblocker.
I've only shot Federal 10-ga slugs in my Ithaca Mag-10. With an improved cylinder choke tube in the barrel I got about 10-inch groups at 50 yards, and that was with clip-on open sights. I thought the poor grouping was the gun rather than the ammo so later when I got a 10-ga barrel for my Thompson Center TCR's I had one choke tube opened up to cylinder and tried it out for accuracy with a scope sight. Again I got about a 10-inch group at 50 yards and as one can probably imagine, recoil out of a 8-pound gun in 10-ga magnum was terrible.
I did shoot one deer with a Federal 10-ga slug. It was a doe of about 120 pounds and it was facing me. I got lucky and centered the slug in its chest. The slug exited the deer through one of the rear quarters about 2 inches from its rear vent. I got a feeling it could have made it through another deer or two after that! The deer fell down and then got up and ran about 60 yards and died. It left a blood trail on the snow that one could have followed at a full run.
I also shot one deer using the 10-ga with OO buckshot. It was a broadside shot at a doe at about 30 yards. Most of the 00 buckshot went completly through the deer (in one side and out the other).
If you want details on the Don Zutz loads send me your email address and I'll send you photos of the article.
