Another young hunter lik'in a handi
« on: October 15, 2008, 04:40:08 PM »
I just finished working with a fellow firefighters 6 yr old setting up a superlight in 243. The young man was so excited. I loaded up several loadings of IMR 4895 with a Remington 80gr PSP. I believe we settled on 30.5grs of the IMR 4895. I'm going to load a few with the a 100 gr Hornady Interlok and see how he does with it. But worst case is he uses the 80 gr Remington. The young man had been practicing sitting on the ground dryfiring off sticks with his dad coaching him. Well, it must have paid off. He hit the cardboard deer with "real ammo" every shot. Not great groups, but at 6 yrs old, off shooting sticks, I even became jealous that my dad didn't have me shooting that young. I'm just happy that I could be apart of the process. I love setting up handi's for the kids. This makes the third one and I'm shooting for a fourth real soon.

That's what I like to hear!
There is no greater joy than to see a youngster acheave a first in any field.
If we all would take the time to help teach our youths the importance of firearm safety, and the vital roles that hunting plays in our economy and in the controll of our wildlife just think how much better they would be.
Learning about our great outdoors in ways that can't be taught in school.
You SIR are doing a valuable service my friend and please don't ever stop.
Our youths ARE our futher!!!

Your so right and handi rifles are the perfect format in which to do that. Its also very rewarding to explain to the parents that the handi is not a wasted investment when you take into account changing stocks as the child grows, changing calibers is just a matter of sending the receivers to be fitted, etc. Overall the handi benefits the child and the parent. I tell the parent that I can't be their dad. You have to be there to control the situation and again the Handi is the perfect format since it is so easy to operate. The hammer is not cocked until "the parent" says so. It forces them to teach proper morales and ethics, patience and choices. I love being apart of getting anyone started.
