Just got a 740
« on: October 13, 2008, 02:32:51 PM »
A couple of weeks ago, I stopped in a gunshop and saw that they had a bunch of used Remington pump and auto rifles. I went back today, after taking my wife's car to two shops.  The first one was to get the last trim pieces put on the grill after she killed a deer with it.  Then I drove it Saturday and it was shaking and loud.  She then admitted she had run over another deer.   I then took it to a second shop to see what she did to the undercarriage.  Fortunately, it was just something loose in the exhaust system, and was fixed in less than an hour.  I was about halfway to the gunshop, so I went the  rest of the way to see if they had any of the Remingtons left.  On the way, I had to stop twice to let deer get out of the road.  I figured I had been given a sign.  After looking over some 740's, 742's, a 74, and some 760's. I settled on a 740 in 30-06.  It had nice wood, a Nikon Prostaff scope, and just felt right in my hand.  All for $325.  Now I may have to go back to the shop and have the moonroof taken out, so I can try to prevent another deer-car collision.

Sounds like the deer don't have it too easy when the 'Mrs.'  is out and about.

Good luck with the new-to-you 740. What did this shop have in the way of 760's?
Any carbines?  Thanks.

The shop had two 760's in .30-06.  All the Remingtons were in rifle format.  For some reason, carbines, unless they are lever actions, are not too popular in this area of the souther Piedmont of Virginia.  This is only my second centerfire semi-auto.  The first one is my SKS.  I spotted the rifles because first of all, they were walnut and blue steel.  Second, semiautos and pumps.  And third, the nice hangtags, with a high
price of $325, and most with scopes and a couple with slings, too.

The Passat is a diesel and gets 47mpg the way she drives, which is wide open,  Another deer or two and her next diesel will have John Deere on the front.
