God, what a horrible thought! :o  I really didn't know it was possible, but given where I live, maybe the 444 or the 45-70.  If somewhere big things with claws and teeth didn't live, maybe the 357 mag reamed to 357 max.  Or the whispered about 35 Rem.  DP

Thutty-thutty of course. It is one of the only two I actually do have in addition to .22 Hornet and I've actually used the .30-30. I've not yet taken the Hornet out of the box. I'll get around to that some day I'm sure.  :o

I have only one Handi,  a 223 which I dearly love.  Enlighten me here.  What is it about the 45-70 Handi that everyone loves?

If I only had one it would be the 30-30, The do it all gun. from deer on down. You might even stretch it to Moose if you are shot selective. The 45-70 is popular in the Handi rifle because of the nostalgia, it shoots well, can be loaded with black powder and not everyone has one among a host of other reasons. With that said unless you are a Black Powder fan I do not get it it either. The thing is; we do not all like the same things, or look for the same thing. Diversity is a good thing, other wise there would only be (pick one) 45-70's, 30-06's, 30-30's or 25-06's with no one to buy any thing else. ;)

The standard all other cartridges are judged by.  30-06!  Good for everything from Prairie Dogs to Big Bears.  Antelope to Moose.  With the right bullet good for everything.

If restricted to one Handi it would be a 22 LR.  I got lots of other guns in various calibers including a few 45-70's.

Why are 45-70's popular?  Don't know but I've been shooting this calibre for half a century or a little more and still enjoy it.  Heck, I was shooting 45-70's when most folks wouldn't have been caught dead with one.  They were giving them away because they were obsolete and of a bygone era.

For me it could be either a 270 or a 45-70 although my 35 Whelen is gaining a lot of my attention lately.
As to why a 45-70 for me it has nothing to do with Black powder, nostalgia, or any of the other reasons giving so far.
It is very easy to reload for, will put most any animal down on the spot with a good shoulder shot, will usually pass clear through an animal which makes tracking a lot easier if it doesn't drop them right there, and it make A REALLY BIG HOLE!!!

I like all the rimless cartridges mentioned in bolt acton rifles.  I chose the .45-70 because you don't have to deal with all the accuracy & extracton/ejection issues that come with the rimless cartridges when they are used in the Handi.

The .357 & .30-30 also seem problem free.  The .500 seems problematic.

These comments are based on reading the daily post on this forum.  I've never fired a Handi chamberd in a rimless cartridge and I probably won't.

Swampman - I have two frames and 6 barrels (3 each) all but the original 223 Ultra Varmint are rimmed cases. The Ultra is the one that got the whole thing started for me, the second time around. I also prefer the rimmed cases for the Handi. 357, 44, 444, 30-30, 22 Hornet. However I never have had any issues with ejection of the 223. It is the ejector, not extractor; which is supposed to eliminate all problems with extraction. I just have this personal preference for rimmed cases in a single shot, but will not limit myself to just those. I really want an all stainless steel 30-06 with Cinnamon Lams, or Pepper Lams (no thumbhole). To do that I am going to have to buy a 45-70  ::) and trade for a set of stock/foreends. It is all personal preference, isn't it?

I really like my 450 Marlin.  I would probably pick that one, with a 2-7 Nikon shotgun scope.  325gr Hard Cast going at over 2200fps will stop anything I want to shoot.  Round balls and trail boss for rabbits and such.

First post here for me, but without a doubt, if I could only have one HandiRifle, it would be my Hornet. It is nearly perfect as a rifle and cartridge combination for my varminting needs. I keep it in my jeep while I drive the backroads, and keep coyotes, groundhogs and crows in check. It really likes 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips and Hodgdon's Lil' Gun.

I hope to shoot it enough to completely wear it out!
