New 500 Field/Deer
« on: October 06, 2008, 03:41:21 AM »
Was at Wallmart yesterday and they had a 500 syn. for $187. Did the paper work, approved but none in back they lost the box and all for the display and it was rusted so they called the Manager. He went out back and came out with a Field/Deer combo said Here You go. I said I don`t have the funds for that , $209 out the door if You want it. I took it and did not look back . Never shot a rifled slug gun , looked at sabot shells today WOW they are high priced at $3+ a round were do I start? I now every gun shoots different but I need a place to start any help would be great. I reload all my hunting loads for small game I may have to reload for Deer too at this price........John

You done good! someone will chime in here on sabots for that rifled slug barrel or you could post on the slug gun forum where you will likely get a lot of replies. Worth $295-395 list if it was 20 ga or 12 ga.

Whatever you do, don't shoot basic slugs out of rifled barrel.  Because if you shoot a basic slug threw the rifled barrel the plastic left over from a basic slug gets in the rifled groves of the gun, and eventually the patterns will get worse when you shot it.  I would try the cheapest sabots like Lightfields, or Remington copper solids, I have not shot a mossberg shotgun with a rifled barrel, just try different sabots and see what happens.

I would sight in dead on at 50 yards. Know because you have a pump shotgon with a rifled barrel, you should exepct at least 6 inch groups at 100 yards.  Know I have heard of guys shooting at 150 yards and putting 5 inch proups or so.

Hope this helps

You got one heck of a deal on that gun.  The big thing with sighting in a slug gun is don't miss.  It cost too much money for missed shots and the recoil gets old quick.  I've had good luck with the federal barnes expanders in slug guns.  I've never shot a mossberg slug gun, but I'd think you should be able to get good enough groups at 100 yards to take a shot at a deer and knock it right over.

  Hey guys;
Brenneke says their conventional slugs don't hurt rifled barrels..any experience with them ? I was very pleased when my area went from shotgun only to rifles 3-4 years ago..a decent shotgun is darned expensive to sight in. Wouldn't mind the 1 or 2 shots for actual hunting,
but it's not quite that simple

That's exactly how I felt.  When Indiana allowed pistol cartridges in rifle I switched almost immediately.  I reload 44mag rounds for a lot less than I can get sabot slugs.  I'm not the kind of guy who fired 2 or 3 rounds to practice and then goes hunting with that rifle.  I have to shoot a lot just to make sure I don't miss and I think much practice should be required before taking a shot at a living thing.

The old foster type slugs will not hurt a rifled barrel. They will not be as accurate as a saboted slug many times, but still good enough to put a lot of deer down. They may lead the barrel up eventually, but a little Butch's Bore Shine or one of the other bore cleaners will clean it up. I've shot a lot of both types of slugs thru Mossberg 500, 835, Remington 870's, Browning B80 with Hastings bbl, all rifled, w/scope and w/o, and didn't find the accuracy gain at 100 yards to be enough to justify the added cost. At 100+ yards they may very well be beneficial, but for most of my hunting here in IA I didn't find it necessary. FWIW

Well just got in from trying the rifled barrel, Deer season opens Sat. Nov 15th. First 3 shots were the Winchester super X rifled HP slugs got them at walmart for $8.77 for the 15 round box bought 3 boxes took 1 from each box. Only have 50yds. to shoot at behind the house frist 2 about 1in. right and center of bullseye they touched, 3rd bottom right of bullseye. All I did was change barrels never touched the rifle sights. Going over to My brothers tonight He is set up for 100yds. open sight that is a long ways. My long shot will be 75 so for this year I will leave well enough alone. The gun is drilled and taped but I need base have scope and rings that Brother gave Me from His 870( He bought new scope and rings this year) tasco 4x shotgun scope that has worked good for years for Him. I bought the Winlight Sabots all they had left but don`t see any reason to try them ,When I get it scoped I will but at $12.33 for 5 I will wait..........Very Happy John ;D

You got a great deal. Neighbor is using Win Sabots In his Moss 500 synthetic. Right out of the box he had 2" groups at 50 yds. He didnt like the kick, but figured he would have extra padding during winter hunts.

How did you do with the gun for deer season?

You may look into the Bushnel dusk to dawn scopes, unless you have the see thru mounts. It will give you a little more shooting time early morning and late evening.

Was that with the standard slugs john. Because I  shoot a USH with rifled barrell and the remington sluggers. No problem with leading but I swabbed and ran the bore snake every five rounds, ragged hole at 50 yards.  $2 to 5 dollars a shot for the sabots was out of my range for sighting and I have never shot over twice in the field at anything on the ground. You got that pump gun cheaper than I got the single shot USH.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Good job! You just have to love a new gun that puts meat in the freezer ;)

Oh yeah, when people start complaining about old Mossberg's rattling tell them that is for rattling in the bucks and didn't cast you any extra. ;D

Before you invest in the Muzzle Loader barrel, you should research it. I love my Mossy's, but I have yet to hear anything good about that barrel. Good luck

My Dad has one about 3 years now shoots the CVA powerbelts, shoots ok for open sights (He is 69) Dad gets about 5-7in. at 75 yrds. I will have to go and ask Him to let Me put this barrel on My gun and see what happens...........I should do alot better then that Dads hands have a small shake to them.............John
