Sheeeesh!  What a dummy!   ::)  You don't melt the bottle!  You find one that has the exact curvature you need for your rifle!   :P  Now I gotta admit, it took me a more'n a dozen trips to the liquor stow to get different shims to try, but once I found that all US beer bottles have the same general contours and started experimenting with imports, narrowing the list of possible brands went faster!  Imports have much more variety in shape and contour!   ;D

But with all the domestic brands, imports and micro breweries to try out, considering the fact that my saddlebags only hold 1 - 6 pack each, I musta spent a hundred dollars on gas!  Of course, after the first few trips I did break up the monotiny of the ride by trying to chase down po-leese cars and pitch the empties at them...  let me tell you, them boys ain't got NO sense of humor... Would you believe an 800 pound cruiser makes a pretty fair dirt bike?

Anyway, after 6 or 8 trips I hit on the idea of trying a few of the mini (airline style) bottles of likker as well as the beer.  Seemed like a good idea since the pin only measures .375 and all the beer bottles didn't seem to have curves that tight.  I finally found one that has the EXACT curvature, but wouldn't you know it, just as I was licking the last drop from the bottle I dropped it!   :o   Darn near killed myself grabbin' for that little bottle as it headed toward the concrete floor in my gun room!  Fell outa my chair, busted my head against the reloading bench, scared the crap outa the dog and cat, and the bottle smashed into iti biti pieces!   :'(  When I woke up I figgered I better get another one of them little bottles before I forgot what it was so I crawl... uh, WALKED out to my bike for another trip to the neighborhood bottle shop.  Well, what do you think I see?  Helicopters with searchlights flying everywhere, roadblocks at every corner, po-leese cars crusin up and down the roadway... I 'spose they was a fire or sumpin' but they was way to much law around for me to be ridin', seein how my tag was expired and all.

So I grabbed a can of Bud from the fridge and went to my gun room to relax a bit.  This experimenting and innovating can get down right exhausting!  Well there I was, sitting there, drinking a cold beer, looking at the can, then at the underlug, then at the can, then at the underlug... and all of a sudden it was all clear!   :o  I couldn't believe I didn't think of before!   ::)  With the cost of beer nowadays, just buy another rifle!

I think we ought to have a Handi Shiming Party at Pete's place!    8)   But we don't use no old, trashy shim material that been laying around in bags!   >:(  You got to provide the new raw material!   ;D

And to think my friends say that I have issues , they should hang around here for awhile .  ;D

I still think it would be easier to just melt & shape the shims .  ;)

No stimpy, I think you're wrong.  We get melted and then form the shim.  Anyhow, let me know how many guys are coming and I'll get fresh shim material.
